The most reasonable method would be to bus or taxi to Playa Del Carmen and take the ferry from there to Cozumel. It is about 30 minutes to PDC and the ferry is another 30-45 minutes, if my memory serves correct.

Gee, Diana, I guess you learn something new every day...there is a ferry that leaves out of Puerto Juarez (much closer to cancun than PDC) that goes to Cozumel via Isla Mujeres everyday!
Here's the link in case you ever want to take it...

greenie,
Your link is not working... I am assuming you have taken this ferry?
I have been traveling to Cozumel for 11 years, and if there is still a ferry from Puerto Juarez to Cozumel, (which I have heard was discontinued) it is a car ferry, and it takes 3 hours over very rough waters, and it leaves once or twice a day.
I doubt the OP wants to spend six hours on a car ferry.
The ferry from PDC to Cozumel runs all day and there are many departures and arrivals to choose from. The crossing takes 45 minutes, and the ferries are very nice with A/C, big screen TV's and drinks and snacks on board.
Yes, you DO learn something new every day!

I really do recommend flying from Cancun to Cozumel if one can aford it - especially if one does tend to be seasick.
I've taken that ferry at least 25 times and have never had a problem, but the water can be very rough. One time it was so bad that it took us about 45 minutes just to get us all on because the water was so rough you had to wait until the ferry was on an "up" wave and jump through the door so you would not hit your head on the door (or worse) on the "down" wave.
It's only about $60 one way to fly, and you are there in 20 min. from Cancun. When you consider how much a taxi to PDC is, and then the cost of the ferry, and the time involved, it's a much better way to go...
Some people do take the bus to PDC and then the ferry also. That is a less expensive option and the busses are very nice, but that bites into day trip time.
Flights go all day back and forth every hour or so. To me, if time and comfort are important, fly.
