Buenos Aires resort-type hotels?
Hello. I am considering a trip to Buenos Aires but I find that all the hotels seem very business-oriented. I'm looking for something more of a resort, with a large pool and pool bar and more open-air instead of stuffy,yet close to the best restaurants and shops...Any suggestions???

I am going to BA very soon and I am trying to find a hotel. What is the best neighborhood to stay in? All the hotels I am looking at seem to be near the Metropolitan Cathedral. Is this a good area to stay in?

In a word, no...the area near the Metropolitan Cathedral is not the best area in which to stay.....Recoleta is infinitely better, more people friendly especially at night...more residental, with lots of sidewalk cafes...movie theaters...etc...

I don't understand. I bought a map of Buenos Aires and it seems all the major hotel are in this area. I am staying at the Lancaster on Cordoba Av. When I look at the map, Recoleta appears to be just a short cab ride away. Why stay in Recoleta when I have to take cabs to San Telmo and Boca anyway--they are much farther away from Recoleta?

The main reason is SAFETY. Recoleta is definitely the safest area to be in especially if you like to take a stroll in the the evenings. Lots of good restaurants within walking distance of good hotels. Taking a cab to the other areas to visit (stick to daylight hours in these areas ) is no big deal and not overly expensive. We did that on our trip to BA several years ago and thoroughly enjoyed being in the Recoleta district.

Two or three points:
1. The Lancaster (Cordoba and Reconquista) is some distance from the Metropolitan Cathederal)....The two are different parts of the downtown area, and the Lancaster enjoys the better location...
The Lancaster is in the commercial district, very near Galerias Pacifico with its excellent food court and shopping...and to the pedestrian mall, Florida....The area is bustling and safe during the day....but there are few people out and about on Cordoba at night...but there is a cab stand just outside the hotel on the corner of Reconquista and Cordoba...take one when you go out at night and you should be fine....
2. The Lancaster is a "character" hotel...if you enjoy older hotels that have architectural charm you will enjoy this hotel.... If you are not pleased with the first room you are shown, ask to be changed...some rooms are much nicer than others...
3. As with most cities, a "short cab ride" away can also be a world away....Recoleta is not the same as downtown, and downtown is not the same as San Telmo or La Boca....As DE mentions, Recoleta is more upscale and has a safer feel at night, especially on the Junin side of the cemetary....the "restaurant row" area..

Hi Melody , BUenos Aires is a city like New York or London, no resorts there, but if you wish to spend a great time in a resort like hotel I recommend the Four Seasons at Carmelo, not far, really although it is in Uruguay. It has great fares for being a Four seasons, and it is a little gem. Good luck.
