I would say Naples is a better location to see Capri Vesuvius and Pompeii - you will also be more likely to get a decent priced hotel there and less crowded ferry services.
You can take a train from Naples to Salerno and then a ferry to see the Amalfi Coast.
Sorrento is expensive and is one of the most touristy towns in Italy. If you want some local culture, it's not the place to be unless you mind mingling with half of Manchester and hanging out in Irish pubs.
