Le Sirene, Praiano
I'm hoping Ira can give me some advice on this hotel and Praiano. I am planning on going to Amalfi Coast with a girlfriend next fall. I've been to Sorrento twice (she hasn't been) and really enjoyed it, but I thought it might be fun to go some place a little bit off the beaten path. Praiano sounds lovely and the hotel looks beautiful. Ok, here's my big concern - how is the transportation - we would want to go to Capri, Sorrento, Postitano, Amalfi, Ravello, etc. Is it easy to get around on the bus - does it run frequently and how late at night? I've been advised by a good friend who has also stayed there, that there's not much in Praiano itself as far as places to eat/drink and it is very quiet at night. If we spent the day in Sorrento and had dinner, are we going to be able to get a bus back in the evening. Also, is it hilly like Positano? I just love the idea of sitting on that beautiful balcony, looking out on the water, sipping a glass of wine, but are we going to be bored being slightly isolated?

Barb - I'll leave Ira and others to comment on staying in Praiano. It's always seemed a little quiet to me, but I guess it depends what you want.
As regards public transport, the buses don't run late. You can find the Sorrento-Positano-Praiano-Amalfi timetable on:
http://www.sita-on-line.it/ORARI-CAM...i-Sorrento.htm
The last bus back from Sorrento is currently 20.05. The timetable changes in high season - but I don't think they run much later than this.
For Ravello you have to change in Amalfi. The timetable is on:
http://www.sita-on-line.it/ORARI-CAM...alfi-Scala.htm
There is a hydrofoil service to Capri from Positano.
You can find timetables on:
http://www.capri.net/home/en/transport.php
Hope this helps ...

Hi Barb,
Positano has two very good restaurants - La Strada and La Brace. There is also a nightclub about 2 km down the road. There is a small bar that has very good gelato.
The orange bus runs between Positano and Praiano about every 1/2 hour. The hotel can give you the schedule.
The last SITA bus from Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi to Praiano is at about 8:00 PM, but check with the hotel.
There are ferries from Positano to Capri for about 10E.
Positano - Capri
9.10 - 10.00 - 11.45 - 14.20 - 15.45 - 18.00
Capri - Positano
11.40 - 16.25 - 17.00 - 18.40 - 19.15
You can also take ferries between/among Sorrento and Amalfi and Positano.
To get to Ravello, you have to take the bus from Amalfi, no matter where you started from.
Praiano is not quite as vertical as Positano. There are about 40 steps from the hotel Le Sirene to the Coast Road. Porter service is available - 5E/bag.
We had big lunches in Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi and small dinners in Praiano, except for those nights that we had small lunches when we were visiting other towns and big dinners in Praiano. In our 8 days there we had large dinners at each of the two Praiano restaurants twice. They treat you like friends the second time.
La Strada has an absolutely terrific Pancetta and Cippolini pizza.
Hope this helps. Have a great trip.

Great information - thanks. ira did you mean Praiano has two good restaurants, not Postitano? I've been to Positano, Amalfi and Ravello before, loved them all, but just thought it would be really relaxing to stay in a small town, IF the transportation was convenient, which it sounds like it is. So, we would just plan on early evenings. Looking at the web page for the hotel, the yellow corner room with balcony and side window looks just beautiful. Do you happen to know what room # this is?

Hi Barb,
Yes, I meant Praiano.
We had room no. 12, which was upstairs in the left corner, facing the water. The balcony was quite private.
The yellow room seems to be in the right corner.
Give my regards to Giancarmine & Maria if you stay there.

interesting.
This topic has come up several times.
There's no doubt looking out from a hotel down to the water and around in Positano is one of the great reconizable sights.
Having said that, one poster last year was quite taken by the russle of the curtains all evening.
We've been there twice (both times coming from Sorrento) and we looked for some kind of a central square in Positano. To me it's a few pedestrian walkways lined with t-shirt stores. Not very much to it.
Ravell has a town center and is quite enjoyable to walk around. I don't remember but I think Amalfi also has a bit of a town.
Sorrento is an ideal jump off location for Pompei, Positano, Capri.
I don't remember schedules in the middle of the summer (I don;t know when you're going) but they really aren't very good for a day trip from Sorrento. The bus requires an iron stomach and the boats leave late to go and early to return to Sorrento.
As I think about it, I would stay in Sorrento and do the side trips. Then possibly keep my hotel in Sorrento and take a boat to Positano and sleep over returning by boat late the next afternoon.
I realize I'd be paying for 2 hotels one night but this is a vacation and that way you get the most out of it.
Just another opinion.
