Question and Suggestion. Days will be long in July. Before dawn arisings can maximize your experiences. Four adults are often difficult to schedule. A standard rule notes that you need add 15 minutes per adult to any travel schedule. Fuel the car, lay out the next day's wardrobe, and pack everything for the next day's departure. Let us know how much of your schedule you were able to make.

Melissa5,
Good luck on your decision, it is a tough one. Even now as I think of what to do when we go back- fitting it all in is still tough. DH wants the Southwest, I want the Northwest AND we both want Cashel and Doolin. I think I may need to start planning trip #3.
Awaiting your final itinerary...feel like I'm living it all again!
OK, if you're interested, I put a few (10)of my pics here for you, it's all new to me and I hope it works!

Melissa5 - the advice about the locations of the B&B's is perfect. I did not do this and ended in the middle of nowhere. At night, driving back from a pub, located in another section of the middle or nowhere, with no idea where we were or where we were supposed to head, IT WAS DARK! Darker than any dark I've ever seen, except in Mamoth Caves! There is no ambient light and the lanes have stacked rock walls built up to about 2 1/2 feet and the lanes are really lanes for 1 1/2 cars...
All this to say, pick your B&B carefully and probably within walking distance of the pub.

Hi Melissa5...not intending to hassle you of course! What I sense is that you (as do many) have a general idea of where some ancestor originated, but not the exact address so to speak. Actually, you DO have a pretty good idea.
When I was in England, however, I could locate the exact spot in Thulston, Derbyshire, (house now torn down with bricks used by a neighbor) where my greatgrandparents on my father's side lived before departure 1851 as Mormon converts coming to Iowa. Also I found the exact house where my widowed great-greatgrand mother on my mother's side was living near Wigton which is near Carlisle before leaving 1821.
On the other hand, however, most ancestors came much earlier and I only know counties or parishes of origin. And though I have Thomas ancestry I have no idea that any of the many Thomas tombstones in Welsh graveyards are relations. Well anyway, it's perfectly OK to soak in a general area of origin and pretend it might be so.
As for authentically Irish...yes by all means, the pubs. We just don't have the equivalent here, a gathering place for music and talk. Forget about our ubiquitous shopping malls! What else? This depends on where you are, for the green fields and the horses and the castles and the churches can be very "Irish." Of course, certain historical sights would be for me a must such as monastic centers and prehistoric burial mounds and also the Burren/Moher area. Hubby must definitely study up on the Burren, BTW.
Carry on!

12PerfectDays, loved your photos of the Rock of Cashel, they are definitely evocative of that misty Irish mystique! I'm glad you posted them as for now that might be as close to the Rock of Cashel that I can get.
I understand your feeling that you wish you'd had more than 1 day. I felt that way when I squeezed in a 1-nighter in Siena, Italy...loved it loved it loved it, wanted a whole week!
Well clearly I"ve got to see the Rock of Cashel someday, on the next trip if not this one.

MerritM: "Darker than any dark I've ever seen"...now, that is DARK! You are very descriptive, and I will keep that in mind when booking b&bs. In fact, I think I'd better pack some flashlights...

Ozarksbill, can you not at least get your bricks back from that Thulston, Derbyshire neighbor?! How cool that you have that much detail on ancestry.
Don't worry, I have already been "hassled" by expert hasslers on fodors! I always enjoy chatting about Ireland and ancestry with you.
