Salzburg: Pensione Wolf or Goldene Ente?

I've read a number of reviews of the Wolf-Dietrich (sp?) but haven't found much on the Pensione Wolf. Now, I have reponses for P. Wolf and the Goldene Ente and both are the same price (Euro 100). Having never stayed at either location, can anyone offer feedback on which they would prefer?

Thanks!

I have stayed at the Hotel Goldene Ente before it updated its name. I doubt if the building has changed, however.

The rooms are ok, the location is excellent, and the food in the restaurant is good to excellent. The breakfast is one of those morning feasts that will have you hustling down the stairs, rather than waiting for the little elevator.

I liked it. If you don't have a car, it is very convenient to everything in the Old Town, but far enough from the train station that you will not want to walk it.

I am not sure how much it has changed since I was there. Rick Steves endorsed the place I am told, and that usually brings a change for the worse in my opinion. When I was there, we had room 16 up high and it was fine.
The bathroom was divided; the shower and WC were separate. The bed was ok. The room was a little small by American standards, but tolerable.

As indicated earlier, the breakfast was enough to write about.

There is no lobby, and check in was at the bar, between the dining room and the kitchen. Watch it if you walk in at meal time because the route to the stairs and elevator and the path between the restaurant and the kitchen intersect right there. And those folks hustle.

If Robert Dürnle is still the manager, the place is in good hands. He is one of the best I have seen. My guess is that a man of his talents for hotel management has moved up the ladder by now.

[I know he dropped his stamp on Gimmelwald, Switzerland, and people not go there expecting something that isn't.]

Do a text search on Goldene Ente and you'll get reviews. Recent posters have not been as positive--new manager.

The Am Dom just down Goldgasse is a bit cheaper and the owner, Herr Bachleitner, is really great. Some rooms are small, but ours (#11 I believe) had two bedrooms and was huge. I thinki it's around 88-94 Euro before June 15h. Here is the website: http://www.amdom.at/price.html

I appreciate the feedback. Brookwood, very helpful info from your stay. And, JN, I did notice that the reviews were less enthusiastic as of late. Will investigate your suggestion for Am Dom ... hadn't come across that hotel yet.

Thanks!

If Dürnle is gone, there will be a difference. Which way, I don't know.
Herr Robert ran a tight ship, hands on.
He had spent 2 years in Australia, and he made sure he handled the English speaking customers. He was very much the order taker and meal planner.
Others brought the food to you after he took the order.

If he is gone, I find it hard to imagine that a better man took his place. Robert was on a team that won the silver medal in an international hotel service contest. I would like to see the team that won first, they must be real crackerjacks!! Like I said earlier, he was the best I have seen at his job. He worked hard,he worked long and he worked smart.
