We stayed at the Blaue Gans in 1997, and can't recall it as an "art hotel". We did enjoy our stay there and remember the rooms were old and quaint, nicely decorated (I think the building is 650 years old). We ate in the restaurant, good meal (actually ate there twice), very rustic setting, timbers in the ceiling, etc.
The setting was perfect - on the Getreidegasse in the old section of town - down the block from Mozart's house. We arrived by train and took the bus (#1 I think) which dropped us off almost in front of the hotel. Excellent base for exploring Salzburg. And the price was right - under $100USD.
If you choose the Blaue Gans as your hotel I hope you have as nice a stay as we did. Enjoy your travels and have a safe trip. Peace.

I can't give you recent information on the Blaue Gans, but thank you for this blast from the past....I stayed there in early January 1973. We were 3 backpacker students who lucked out and got a triple room there on the cold & snowy day of our arrival. If we'd needed doubles or singles, they'd have been full up.
I do recall the location, in the middle of the old town, was ideal for a tourist. You stepped out the front door into a fairytale medieval setting. We walked quickly to many of the sites we wanted to see. As for the hotel itself, our triple was spotless. Bathroom was down the hall. But, that was way back in 1973....

Didn't stay there on my recent trip to Salzburg, but peeked inside. It has been modernized--quite chic. Does have lots of art hanging and a not-cheap chic restaurant right on the street. Yes, great location.
We loved the Gasthaus Steinerhof on the edge of town--15-20 min. easy bus ride to the Altstadt and only 55 euros for a room. Quaint decor and gorgeous views.

We just returned from there--stayed in a larger, "Karajan" room, which ran 128-135 Euro/nt for two. The hotel has been renovated over the past few years and is really modern and nicely appointed. For example, our room had a fridge, hair dryer, large bathroom, clean and modern rooms with newer carpeting. Free internet access in the lobby, a wonderful breakfast room with the best food we had in 3 wks in Europe, and a nice outdoor cafe overlooking the horse bathing fountain in back, coupled with an unbeatable location and very helpful staff make this one of our favorites (stayed 4 times since 1972). You can get cheaper, nice places in the Altstadt, but if Blaue Gans is in your price range, I'd recommend it highly. One caution: regular size doubles, though cheaper, are extremely small.

JN: We are holding reservations for 2 Jederman rooms with a/c which was all they had for our dates in August. I assume these are the "extremely small" rooms. Do you think they are too small for 2 teens in one room, and 2 middle-aged but not large adults in the other?
Mikemo: I'll take a look at the Wolf-Dietrich. Thanks for the tip.
