Salzburg Hotel Weisses Kreuz

Has anyone stayed at the Weisses Kreuz? We've stayed at the Blaue Gans and Am Dom, and enjoyed both. The W-K looks interesting and the price is much lower than the Blaue Gans. If anyone has information on what the WK is like and whether you'd recommend it, I'd appreciate it. Thanks

Stayed in May 2001 and wrote this in my trip report:

"Hotel: Weisses-Kreuz (http://www.members.eunet.at/weisses.kreuz/), which is at the base of the fortress and right next to the Kapitelplatz. My single room had its own bathroom and was cozy for 700ATS per night, including buffet breakfast in the restaurant. The hotel also offers parking. A taxi from/to the train station cost about US$7 each way."

I thought the Balkan food in the little restaurant was good (very filling). The staff was very pleasant. Haven't stayed at either of your previous hotels (stayed at the Amadeus in '99). I definitely would stay there again. But, my hotel needs are fairly modest ... it isn't super fancy but is clean and relatively quiet (an outdoor beer garden above often provided late night "seranades" but was kind of charming to me). Please let me know if you want more specifics.

Heather
Is this hotel located just below the Stiegl Brau beer garden under the fortress? I think I recall it's location, now, but don't recall what the hotel looked like.

Was your room reasonably sized? The Bathroom ok? Our neds are modest, too, but my spouse would be concerned, shall we say, if the bathroom was either not very clean, modern enough or way too cramped.

As an asid, when I had done a Fodors search on the WK, I had come across your post saying you were planning to stay there last may. Thanks for sharing your experience.

You know the location exactly - right below Stiegl. The single room was more than large enough for me. Plenty of room for my bag, clothes, whatnot, and very clean. The bathroom was smallish (I'm used to that living in a vintage apt. building here) but modern fixtures and a very nice sit-down tub-shower combo. It also had a hairdryer. There aren't many rooms, so no noticeable coming-and-going crowd noise. Beds/bedding was comfy, towels were plentiful and fluffy. They even had that smelly pate stuff I love with cheese and tomato on my morning breakfast sandwich. Nothing negative whatsoever to report.

Now that I'm thinking about it, it really puts me in the mood to go back. *sigh* When are you headed over?

If all goes as planned/hoped--May of 2004. This is how incredible is the pull of Europe--planning over a year in advance. Dreams are good, though.

Speaking of good: How was the breakfast at the WK?
