We may not be talking about the All Blacks - I hadn't heard that either! Seem to be enough discussion here.

Heard Michael Cheka interviewed today re "not naming the all-blacks". He said he calls every country by its name not Reds or Wallabies. Then the reporter asked him to say "All- Blacks" and laughingly did .

Fantastic night at the Bill McLaren Foundation Dinner in Aberdeen last night. Michael Lynagh was really nice. Quiet and unassuming, polite and pleasant.
Nick Farr-Jones- not at our table- much more exuberant. Got some lovely stories.
(Still want/expect the Blacks to win)

wallabies had George Gragen the last Oz world cup winner captain give the team a revup. Hope it works.
Interesting conversations this morning about the popularity of RU in Oz . Apparently its only played in posh private schools which now have AFL and soccer to compete with as well.
Maybe It will be popular if we win!!

I don't know about the " only in 'posh' private schools", Northie.
(Rugby) Union may not be as universally played as League in NSW or Qld or AFL in other states, but It was & still is played in the back-blocks of NSW. My niece's 8 year old is playing for the Coonamble junior RU club, goes to the local Convent & a more motley team you'd work hard to find.
His father, grandfather & great grandfather all played country Union & my husband used to play League one day & ref or play Union the next. We'd often be travelling a couple of hundred kms round trip each weekend day - or if the "away" games were in towns closer to each other than to our place, we'd stay over night at friends' places ( in the rival team, usually.)
Anyway - back to tonight's game. I'm not keen enough to get up in the middle of the night for much sport - but my alarm will be set for 2:45 tomorrow morning!
I may as well do it voluntarily - my Christchurch friends will ring me every time one of the All Blacks makes a run for the line anyway.
Very exciting to see our two great teams meet on such hallowed & neutral turf.
Good luck Kiwis & may the Wallabies wallop your lads with good humour & good sportsmanship

agreed farremog that it has been a great tournament, despite the poor showing of the home teams, England being the biggest disappointment of course so far as we were concerned. The weather has probably played its part - we have had one of the driest, warmest Autumns on record.
However there is another England team to get behind tomorrow - England's RL boys take on NZ at about 5pm GMT.
Looks like another early morning for you NZ sports fans - unless of course you are still up partying from the night before.
Not sure yet which one of you lot of antipodeans I'll be supporting - NZ probably as it would take a hell of a lot to make me support an Aussie team, dearly as I love you all on an individual basis.

McCaw, love him or hate him, is probably the best rugby player of all time.
We have a houseful this afternoon, for rugby watching. One is Australian. Oddly, although I tipped the Blacks right at the start, and they are definitely my second team, that Scottish underdog thing is kicking in. Or it may be spending the evening with Michael Lynagh.
The story I liked best was domestic. He lives in Richmond these days and has three boys, all of whom play rugby, one probably better than the other two. There's a fan zone in Richmond park and that lad wanted to go with his mates to the England-Australia match. He asked his dad if he could wear one of his old jerseys, which, apparently, are kept in a box in the attic.
He was in the habit of marking the collars with the name of the match it was worn in. First one out.. "Can I wear that?" Collar- RWC Final 1991. Response- "not a chance!"
Nick Farr-Jones told the whole audience about Campese (who seems not to be too popular with his team mates) having blown the Lions series in 1989, got stopped for speeding on the way home. He told the cop "I've had a really s***day, mate" and the cop said "I was ..... there, mate" and gave him the ticket.
