Rugby World Cup - is your team playing?
Tonight the Rugby World Cup kicks off at Twickenham with the opening ceremony plus the hosts, England, playing Fiji.
Will your team be there?
What are their prospects?
Will you/ friends and neighbours be following it?
Do you have tickets for any of the matches?
[BTW, before you ask, I'm posting this in the Europe forum rather than the Lounge as it's being held in the UK and it will mean that everyone can join in, not just the Loungers; I'm going to post a link on every relevant forum].
To answer my own questions:
Will our team be there? - Yes, we're supporting England.
What are their prospects? - nothing less than a win in the final will do.
Will friends and neighbours be following? - Yes - it's quite popular here. Lots of pubs will be showing the matches and our Rugby club is going to be open for every match, with drinks, food, and hankies for the mopping up of tears readily available.
Do you have tickets for any of the matches? No, but some friends have lots of them. On balance, we decided that watching on telly or at the Rugby club would probably be as much fun.
now, it's over to you - and the players of course!

It seems that annhig's attempt to do this has caused her to be mistaken for spam and got her account suspended. Let us hope this injustice is corrected and she is reinstated promptly.

Yes we are in the tournament so I will be cheering for Ireland. Not going to any of the matches but will be holding the fort here when the hubby goes to Ireland/France in Cardiff.
Also cheering for Argentina as I ended up with them in the work pools!

Save the Truro one! Come on Ann, you'd think you'd be able to put together a cohesive argument for reinstatement!

hurray, I'm back. [spot the difference!]

@Rubicund - I did, as did a lot of kind people like you. so far, Fodors has not replied or acted, so I got fed up and - well - here I am.
I wonder why she'd post this in the US or Canada forum where essentially no one but the players and their families give a flying fig about the RWC.>>
@bigRuss - I was being methodical and working my way down the forums. I suspect that this may have contributed to my downfall. However, I do think that, like the BBC, we have a duty to educate as well as to entertain, so I was hoping to bring the existence of the tournament to those poor unfortunates who think that sport ends with ice hockey and the NFL. Thank you for your support!
So - thoughts about the opening ceremony?
it got a thumbs up from us
the first match?
IMO England made heavy weather of it, but then Fiji made its own contribution, perhaps more than was expected, particularly in defence. Neither of our local lads - Jack Nowell who is a fisherman's son who so far as I know has never been anywhere near a public school - and Josh Matevesi who turns out for local team Camborne when he's not playing for Fiji - were selected. Shame. Hope they both get on the field next time.
Just watching the end of the Tonga v Georgia match now - Georgia are surprisingly good, Tonga struggling, but anything could happen in the last 8 minutes!

that's very kind, flpab. lots of people have already done so, but I suspect that the mods are having the weekend off - perhaps they are watching the Rugby!
I'm able to access all areas save for the Lounge - and I can probably manage without reading FrankS's ramblings for a few days or so but if you feel so moved - why not?
BTW, do you want to know the score or shall I [try to] avoid spoilers?

What happened... Banned from the lounge?>>
no, account suspended because I foolishly tried to post links to this thread on other forums, thinking that then we could all join in. The algorithms identified me as an icelandic car hire company or russian brothel owner or suchlike, and the mods don't work weekends, by the looks of it, because sofa my request to be re-instated [and many messages of support from some very kind people] has gone unanswered.
perhaps it's the Fodor equivalent of Purgatory!
anyway, I thought laterally, and here I am.
flpab - 50 - 7.

oh, sorry, flpab - you want to know WHICH team scored 50?
Ireland of course. they had the 4 tries to get the bonus point in the first half and then it was all over bar the shouting.
Peg - it's a great game, much more exciting than football as there is something happening more or less all the time, with lots of points being scored, often by both sides, so the advantage can swing from one side to the other, which makes it more fun for the spectators.

Even if rugby isn't your cup of tea, this short video may well be:
