Rue Cler or Latin Quarter

My best friend and I have been researching where to stay for a while. Rue Cler came up in the Rick Steves book as a great place. I have also read about the Latin Quater and now torn. I am starting to read and hear suggestions to stay in the Latin Quater. My best friend and I are in our late 20's and would like to stay somewhere fun but inexpensive. Can some one give a description in their own words what they liked and didnt like about each area. And if they can compare it to an area in an American city.

Thanks!

I don't know Rue Cler, but by looking at my map, I can see that it is in the 7th arrondissement and about 10 min walk from the Eiffel tower.
However, it is a very residential area, with few shops and restaurants, so I would not recommend you stay there.
On the other hand, I LOVE the LATIN QUARTER! especially at night... Fun, fun, fun...
Both are good areas. While I hate to generalize, I'd say that Rue Cler is a much older crowd. Expect to see more middle age and older budget travelers all following the Rick Steves guides. Latin Quarter is more young and alive. Much more activity at night. More options for inexpensive and fun meals and night life. University crowd right near by as well.

Its according to what your looking for. If your traveling to see the sites and have a quite place at night then I would recommend Rue Cler.

I can party at home, when I travel I want to walk all day and take in the history of the area, I'm not there to party, but it is a matter of choice.

We just returned from staying in the St. Germain area and it was full of people every night late into the night. It is definitely a fun area for younger folks. I would recommend the Latin Quarter for you definitely.

Latin Quarter. I actually usually stay in Rue Cler, but I'm in my late thirties and am not looking for a lot of activity at night. You are and that's a good area. The Marais is another area for active nightlife, but the Latin Quarter will be less expensive.

I just got back from staying in both areas, and even though I'm 60, I really enjoyed the liveliness the LQ/St. Germain, especially since I don't wander too far afield at night. Plus I enjoyed being able to walk to so many sites. I stayed near Odeon/Mabillon metro stops, which is a great area very close to LQ.
