Realistic price for car rental in Italy?

Thanks! I did search the boards but didnt' find my answers. We need a car for 5 days (could do a week but prices seem to be the same) first wk of July. Earlier this month we saw rates under $300 total, now they are closer to 500. Does time of month matter? Any suggestions or ideas to get the best price? We are checking autoeurope, hertz, and avis.

I think the time of rental does matter, but more in terms of the demand/availability. I don't really know what the range is, but I did want to tell you to keep in mind all the taxes/insurance that is needed. I rented a car for 1 week (I've been back now 2 weeks) and the rate was $240 for the week, but ended being $528 with the taxes and insurance (not counting the gas and tolls).

Hi e_roz. This was my one experience with renting a car in Italy. A year ago April, we rented a Fiat Punto, with a manual transmission, through Kemwel (their rates are usually similar to Autoeurope's rates), and it was approximately $230 for 5 days. This was for a pickup in Siena and a drop-off in La Spezia, and I don't *think* there was an extra charge for dropping it off in a different Italian city.

I don't know if time of month, or time of year, has an effect on the rates.

Whate dates are you needing the car, also what are your pickup and drop off locations? What class of car?
I did a search on Autoeurope and for a 4 door lancer July 1-7 was 278.00 total with Rome as pickup and drop-off.I searched for hours for the best price for me and could not beat Autoeurope. If you call the m they are offering a 15% discount if you pay by 4-30-03. 888-223-5555

Gary , great info to call by 4/30. Thanks! We pick up in Florence and ideally would drop off in Pisa but could bring back to FLorence if it saved significant dollars.
