car rental Italy
I have a car thru Avis - Opel Station Wagon that is costing me $826.00 for 6 days! It is all the mandatory stuff they tack on. We need a car that will hold 2 large suitcases and 2 smaller ones. Can anyone help. Actually I originally had a 156 Alfa Romeo but was concerned about the trunk capacity and even their website does not indicate it. ANy suggestions

Check www.kayak.com for great deals on car rentals if you think the price is high (not sure if that is what you're implying). The alft romeo I believe is stick shift. I dont know if that matters. I picked the mercedes C class myself which was adequate and cost $1100. Its automatic as well.
Good luck,
Natalie

Try the AutoEurope/Canadian website. I got a seven-day Ford Focus Wagon rental -- picking up in Rome and dropping off in Florence -- for US$427 for a September 2007 reservation, with a zero deductible.

Ryanair.com has some inexpensive rate for car rental (through Hertz). I booked my one week one way (Rome -> Milan), auto, air, 5 people car for 271 euros. As I understand it, it includes tax and required insurances. The only downside is that the lot is located is secondary aiport (except in Rome).

That's incorrect that AutoEurope doesn't include insurance. In Italy they cover the car completely. In fact we had a dent in our car when we returned it and the agent said it was ok because we were completely covered. This is why so many people rent from AutoEurope.

Car Rental Express, an agency like AutoEurope has full coverage on their Italian car rental, no deductible, no additional cost.
While we have always used AutoEurope in the past, we decided to give this company a shot. We rented through Auto Europa (not AutoEurope), were very pleased with both the car and service. The rates were about $200 less than AutoEurope. Pick-up Rome, drop off Milan.

We rented a new Mercedes 2 years ago from Car Rental Italy, an American based company. They have great rates, we paid $575 for one week and it was through SIXT. We had no problems at all and they were a lot cheaper than any other company. Take a look!

daveesl....I checked on the link you provided but it doesn't say anything about insurance. It mentions VAT and tax included. It is the extra stuff that they tack on that jacks up the price. Do you know if that includes the mandatory insr.

I just checked the site. Click on the Car Rental tab, then choose a location, dates and car. You'll see the options show up. We used Cars Italy & Tours for our rental. This is a bit confusing, but Car Rental Express is a consolidator, that then goes through another consolidator (Car Rental Express) and you end up with Auto Europa (not AutoEurope).
Anyway, when you choose the car, on the left you'll see a menu option for "Rental Policies", click on that then choose Insurance. You'll see the $0 deductible.
I'd never used them before, so I made some inquiries prior to our rental, I found nothing but good things, with the exception of a couple of comments about surly customer service, which I must say did not happen to us. The people we dealt with were great in both Rome and Milan.
Good luck,
Dave

Hi Shar,
Did I miss this or are you getting an automatic? How about packing light so you don't need so much trunk space? It seems high. I got a VW Golf in Sept 05 for $360 al inclusive through Autoeurope for 8 days. Picked up and dropped in different towns, no airports.

Witch of these companies has acess to the newest fleets of cars, and or the higher performance cars?
We are going to be doing a lot of driving in Sicily and are looking for a good performing car to accomodate to adults and 2 medium suitcases.
