Prague to Krakow
Hi,
I am looking to travel from Pague to Krakow and return.
I propose to go Friday evening and return Saturday evening via Sleeper trains .
1)Is train the best / easiest / cheapest method of travel?
2)How much should I expect to pay?
3)Can I buy the train ticket on the day?
All help appreciated.
Kind regards

I think what is best is totally subjective, as is what is easiest. Those two don't usually coincide with cheapest, obviously. I imagine flying would be best in the sense of quickest, I think that's pretty clear when you compare the times, but is probbly not cheapest. I don't know, I haven't flown, only taken the train, but not at night. I personally wouldn't want to take a sleeper train for many reasons.
I don't know the price of the sleeper but the entire trip by day train is very very cheap, trains in the CR and Poland are cheap. I don't remember the exact cost, but I think the entire trip was less than US$50, and that was in first class. I went from Prague down to Olomouc, stayed a day or two (and I really like that town and wanted to spend some time there), then took the train from there to Krakow (need to change at Prerov, as I recall, and then you get on a major fast train which is coming from Vienna to Krakow). I think that broke it up so it was a couple hours down to Olomouc and then about 5-6 hours the next leg.
YOu can always buy tickets the same day if they aren't sold out. I don't usually do that for long distance trips that are a major part of my plans, as I want to make sure I have a seat.

Look trains up at http://plannerint.b-rail.be/bin/quer...n?L=profi&
No prices given.
I see one sleeper that goes all the way from P. to K., and two where you change trains along the way.
Don't know about pricing, these Czech websites might quote:
http://www.czech-travel-guide.com/rail.htm
http://jizdnirady.atlas.cz/JRCis.asp
or ask the folks at
http://www.budgeteuropetravel.com/index.html
You will have to reserve as early as you can, there are only so many couchettes, and even fewer sleeper compartments, and weekends are busier than midweek of course.
How well can you sleep on trains? Have you done it? With 3 or 5 other human beings trying to sleep in the same compartment, with all the little smells and noises humans make, and all the big noises the frequent stops and starts make when people get off and on and slam doors in the middle of the night etc? After two consecutive nights spent like that you may need a rest from the rest...
But if it is all the time you have, travelling at night certainly saves time.

Hi,
Thanks for the replies.
I am looking which is easiest between train or bus - apologies for no stating this.
I have travelled previously from Prague to Budapest about 6 years ago on an overnight train without problem.
Its a little bit of a pain passing through borders and getting woken up etc but no worries otherwise.
I cant seem to see any prices on bahn.de or Czech trains web site.
Back in my days of doing more travelling, the legend that was Ben Haines would have answered this but sadly he has passed away.
Heres hoping someone can assist further.
Thanks

Suggest you send an email to the Czech train system and call the folks at http://www.budgeteuropetravel.com/index.html
I trust you know this site?
www.krakow-info.com/travel.htm
and this one:
www.vlak-bus.cz
I see no night bus P-K
The 9AM bus #473 to Kiev (from Rega Bus company at www.regabus.cz) gets to Krakow at 6:15 PM and cost between 1,500 and 1.600 Kč
You should email to [email protected]

hi abarkie,
it's quite away to go for a day. we wre in Krakow for 4 nights recently and we found more than enough to fill all our time.
any chance that you could extend your trip a bit to make it more worth-while?
regards, ann
