We have reservations in May at the Prague Intercontinental for 185EUR and Best Western Kinsky Garden 150EUR/nite. One of these will be cancelled. Any info. you can share about either of these hotels would be greatly appreciated.

for the past 20 years I have wondered why travelers want to stay at one-size fits-all chain hotels. These hotels have nothing to do with the culture or environment they are in. Where is the charm, adventure, and sense of place?

I was curious about this hotel as we passed it last year while walking the city. Just checked prices for the 2nd weekend in May and their internet site quotes 149 euros / night. Might want to check on prices again, as you might get a better rate.

Jor, to each is his own. I am with you.

I always wonder about people who make critical comments about where other people choose to stay in a hotel, as it can have no effect on them and isn't their money. I wonder whether you even know what you are talking about? I would guess not because BW hotels are simply local hotels that belong to an international marketing consortium, they are just as Czech and "local" as the next one. Your remark about "one size fits all" implies you think all european Best Western hotels are identical, I gather, which is simply rubbish, they have nothing to do with each other except for belonging to that marketing group.

As for Intercontinental, that might be more true, although I think it really is an issue of being modern and large versus whether it is a hotel group or independently owner or not. I think it does reflect local architecture of its time period (which frankly is not to my taste at all, but it does reflect it--ugly 1970s Communist block style). I don't care for its location, either, but I think some people just want a certain level of hotel and service and aren't looking for the hotel itself to be an experience. I wouldn't care for that style myself, but I don't like modern so much in hotels, whether a chain or not, and don't like very large hotels usually. If I'm on business or something, it's a different story and I may have a reason to stay in a hotel like that.

Lots of folks on Fodors talk about staying in cheap, small, bare basic rooms with no charm and say they don't care because a hotel is unimportant to their trip comfort. In any case, Jor, if you've been wondering this for 20 years, I gather you didn't learn anything about Best Western hotels, in any case, during that period you were wondering.

Jerry-
I have a question about the Intercontinental in Paris...Did you have just one room? My children are 13 and 11. I was wondering if we could fit into one room with a rollaway? It would be me, my husband, and two kids. I'm looking at the Intercontinental in PAris. Any info would be appreciated!

While Prague is a very compact city - I thought the Intercontinental in Prague was a bit far from the main hub of the center. I stayed in the Mala Strana at a small boutique type hotel ($125 a night). I will say the outside of the Intercontinental is UGLY - however, reviews I read have praised the interiors. So I suppose the advantage by staying there is you don't have to look at the exterior. The Intercontinental is on a major street but I still got the impression is was a bit on the edge of everything.

The IC is just down Pariska street from Old Town Square, a five minute walk if you go slow, whilst indeed ugly the quality is excellent. The Kinsky gardens is just outside Mala Stana on the SW side, about a 15 minute walk from Charles Bridge. It is a fairly small hotel but I am told the staff is very friendly and helpful.
