I haven't seen them all but consensus among guidebooks and posts on this forum seems to be Poseiden. Have been to it and I can tell you it is nice. We prefer, however, the Covo dei Saraceni directly on the beach rather than the Poseiden which is up the hill a ways. Both have wonderful seaviews.

Spent 3 days at Villa Franca 2 years ago. Great location, very nice staff, very good restaurant. Only negative was that the rooms were tiny, bathrooms were absolutely miniscule.....you couldn't take a shower without creating a rain forest in your room.

I've posted many times (probably TOO many) about the Poseidon on this forum. We were lucky enough to stay in a jr. suite there two years ago,(what a view!) and it was really wonderful. But we also looked at other rooms (while they were being cleaned) that looked quite small. I think it really depends what your budget is, and what category of room you book.
We liked the hotel itself very much. The staff treated us like house guests, and were incredibly accomodating. And the food and view from the restaurant terrace were spectacular. We also didn't mind that the hotel was uphill from town,(it's only about ten minutes) since it enabled us to walk off all the amazing food we ate!
Anyway, have a great time!

thanks for the info. i am not really sure the plans, but i was thinking of stopping in positano and then going to capri on the boat. i was also thinking of sorrento, but have already been there, albeit,20 years ago. i figured positano would be new to me. i am not familiar with the layout of the town, so dont know if up the hill is a negative. i do love to walk so i dont think i would have a problem. any thoughts on conca d'oro? i read about it somewhere and i cant remember the details. any help would be appreciated.i really dont know what a medium price for a room is--

Just so you know, sometimes the boats don't run from Positano to Capri, because of rough water conditions. This doesn't seem to be a problem out of Sorrento, where there's a deep harbor. I don't know anything about Conca'oro, but have heard good things about Casa Albertina, which was recently written up in one of the travel magazines.(Travel and Leisure, I think).

Meant to add that I think a medium priced room in season can run anywhere from about $100-250 in the summer. Wide range depending on location to town, amenities, etc. I'm sure you could find out more about this by looking at the RANTS and RAVES section.

I would recommend hotel L'Ancora in Positano. The location is great. It is about 4 min. walk from the main beach and the views from the rooms are stunning. The rooms are large and the bathrooms are huge.

We are planning to be in Positano mid June and have reservations at Covo dei Saraceni. I am glad to hear JmVikmanis had a good experience. This was recommended to us by someone who lived nearby.
Can anyone recommend the best way to get from Rome to Positano? Train, bus or car?
