Parking Garages Outside Venice Safe?

I am curious as to how safe the parking garages outside Venice are. We will be driving down from France and plan to garage our car for three days. I don't want to have to lug our ski clothing (no equipment) with us on the vaporetto to our hotel and I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if it would be a good idea to just leave the bags with the ski clothes locked inside our car?
Thank you.

Hello Anapuni, we have parked our rental car at the Piazzale Roma Garage with luggage in the trunk for over a week more than once and never had a problem..but that doesn't mean you won't. Is that where you are planning on leaving your car? You will "probably" be alright but if having your items stolen would cause you great stress or a big financial problem then I wouldn't.

We are planning to use Tronchetto. Do you know the reputation?

Hi A,

It's been suggested many times here that if you leave anything in your car it should be out of sight, preferably in a locked trunk.

If you have a hatchback, it should have a screen that closes off the back from view.

Don't leave anything that you can't afford to lose.

PS,

Some folks have suggested running a bicycle cable lock through the handles of your luggage to tie it all together.

Makes it more difficult to steal.

Leave it locked in the trunk out of site. In addition, buy an Italian newspaper, and make it look as if it has been read. Leave the newspaper on one of the seats. That makes it look like you are NOT a tourist. Italian cars usually don't interest the thieves.

most likely you won't have a boot/trunk unless you hire a posh car. anyway all hatches in europe have a cover over the boot storage so don't worry about that...non-issue.

and don't bother with the local newspaper trick or its useless cousin in france, the baguette on the dash trick. theives here in europe will go for anything when they are on a prowl. just do the obvious... don't leave anything visible and nothing of value anywhere in a car. a local car is just as likely to contain a laptop or an i-pod as a tourist car is to contain a camera or a passport to a land of opportunity. equal opportunity. anyway the OP is driving from france so he or she will presumably have a car with french reg. the car park will be filled with cars from all over europe anyway...all tourists...ghastly amount of germans.

We have parked our car for several days at the big garage at Piazzale Roma severla times - and had not problems at all.

However - we would never leave anything visibile inside the car - not even a map or newspaper - and the one time we left something in the trunk it was locked in the trunk when we left Florence (other luggage was inside car - so no one could see inside the trunk.

If you leave something of any value visible I would asume it would be gone when you return.
