OFF WE GO!!! Thanks Fodorites!!

We are just one week away from embarking on our European Adventure.

Thank you to all who have helped in the planning of this trip!!

I find myself in a very unusual position, one week before we depart. Normally, my whole itinerary is mapped out complete with all hotel reservations made well in advance.

This time 3 nights in Prague, 2 nights in Vienna, 1 night Cesky Krumlov, 2 nights in Hallstatt are all booked.

We have 6 more nights unaccounted for!

Some thoughts are Berchtesgaden, Val Gardena, Hall in Tyrol, are just some thoughts. Staying in the Salzkammergut region for a longer period (St. Gilgen, St. Wolfgang) are also possibilities.

If the weather is bad, have car will travel! Croatia and Tuscany are within reach.

Who knows?

Thanks for all of your assistance! The members of this forum should take a bow for the incredible knowledge they share.

I will provide a trip report....

All the best!!

Consider Zell-am-See for the unallocated time. Nice town in a stunning location, and a good base for the Krimml waterfall and the Grossglockner Road. (Pix at kwilhelm.smugmug.com)

Zell-am-See to Grossglockner Road to Lienz to Val Gardena is one option under consideration.

Thanks bob!

I did heed lots of your advice!

I am no longer flying out of Zurich, instead I followed your advice and will fly out of Munich.

Kind of going to let the weather dictate where I go.'

Just hoping to find last minute lodging along the way.

hey Masterphil, I'm not sure if you'r into this kind of thing, but one place I really like is the Liechtensteinklamm (gorge) just south of Bichhofshofen so sort of halfway bewteen Salzburg and the entrance to the GG Hochalpenstrasse. Check it out on google images and see if it appeals to you.

Hi Masterphil,

Sounds great and the places you have listed to fill in the extra 6 days are excellent. No matter which you pick...
Berchtesgaden area
Val Gardena (actually anywhere in the Dolomites!)
Hall in Tirol
Zell am See
Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse... You can't go wrong.

We did the route from Munich to Ramsau (Berchtesgaden)/Grossglockner/Heiligenblut/Alta Badia/Val Gardena/Hall in Tirol/back to Munich. Outstanding.

Have a safe and great trip!

Paul

Masterphil, it's really wild-check it out. And although I did not do this in late August (when I was last there it was late May/early June), I had no problems at all stopping at country pensions at random in Austria without advance booking.
I know August is a different animal, but the small country pensions/gasthouses are all over the place.

And not to keep throwing suggestions at you, as I'm sure your're overloaded with possibilities, but the fortress castle of Hochosterwitz near Klagenfurt is well worth going to if you're down that way. If you go to only one castle in Austria, this is the one.
