Hello All, (Stu, St. Cirq and other experts especially),

I am planning a trip to the Dordogne for a special occasion late June/early July. Our group is now expanding and I was wondering if anyone had stayed at a large villa/gite or hamlet of villas in the Dordogne. We prefer upscale as this is a milestone trip and would like to be pampered. A place that is child friendly with pool and linens included appreciated.

I am going through all the villa rental websites and Simply Perigord but also would like to see if anyone has any thoughts here.

Finally, we're thinking close to Sarlat and Domme but open to other areas. Would love to be able to walk to small village but also fine with more rural location.

Any thoughts/advice would be so appreciated! Thank you!

They have a 'prestige rentals' section which lists large chateau like properties.

We know one, La Vigerie, a chartreuse, (small chateau) very well. It may not be big enough for your group, as it sleeps 8 adults and 2 children. A super 18th century property, renovated with great style and comfort. It is on the Dordogne river itself, very rare, and about 15 minutes from Sarlat. Has its own pool and tennis court and bedrooms are air conditioned.

Thanks Carlux! I remember you are also an expert here. We are 5 adults and 5 kids so this may work perfectly for us.

I am sure hoping airfare goes down soon. Currently a non stop from Washington, DC to Paris is 1400/1500. A stop reduces it a hundred dollars a ticket or so but is an added inconvenience with three small children and a very finite window of vacation!

You can also look at www.gite.com Go to the Southwest and Atlantic and select Dordogne and Gascony in the box. You will find quite a few of what you seem to be looking for in your area. Scroll on down through them..Loire places will be showing first.

If you find something that looks good to you, then ask Carlux for advice about it. She is the one who is in the area and would probably be able to help you.

It looks like some good bargain prices for 2009. I noticed one nice place that said they were giving 2003 rates!!!

We (12 of us) rented the Château Malartrie in La Roque-Gageac for a couple of weeks through Dordogne Rental. It is a superb place and will comfortably accommodate up to 14.

She just replied to me and they are available. It's on the shortlist of three -- I am just waiting to find out by tomorrow if a couple of other family members will be joining the trip or not.

How do you get to the region? We're considering flying from DC to Dublin then on Ryanair to the Bergerac or Bordeaux.

Another option is flying to London then taking Europestar and TGV? Would love your thoughts. Train is interesting as my girls will love it but we could also spend a day or two in Dublin on front end before heading to France.
