My husband and I will be vacationing in the Dordogne region in mid September and were hoping for home base and accommodation recommendations. We are looking for accommodations that are walking distance to the town center, clean, and relaxing. We are hoping to spend less than 225 Euros per night.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

We stayed in a B&B in Albas which is a very cute, tiny village in the Dordogne. It was about 60 euros per night including a lovely continental breakfast in the dining room which has a stupendous view over the river. Bicycles and canoeing gear are provided if you are interested. We could easily drive to nearby towns to visit markets etc. http://www.lotfrance.com/

Thanks for that site Cathie! I've been looking at towns for next year and really wanted to dine at the from here you can't see paris restaurant.

Albas is certainly attractive, but it is not the Dordogne, but the Lot, and the attractions of the Dordogne - the chateaux, Sarlat, Lascaux, etc. are a long way.

I think you would do better to be looking in and around the Sarlat area, but as September is a popular time here, you've left it a little late.

La Recreation, at Les Arques, the restaurant you mention, is not too far from Albas, but equally accessible from other places in the Dordogne.

From Albas, 20 km. from Sarlat 44 km.

So you have a choice.

I see that Ira gave you the web address for Domaine de la Rhue...I heartily agree with the DdlR ...we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there...farm house, beautifully renovated stables, pool, nice , level walk (one hour)through the forest to Rocamadour, and very scenic drives to the heart of the Dordogne (Sarlat, Lascaux Caves, Domme, etc.)... just a quick, easy drive east to the beautiful Cirq d'Autoire (en route is the amazing Gouffre de Padirac), Carennac, Chateau Montal. The owners are delightful young people.

The Domanine has been on our TopTen List since we were there in 2002.
We used it as a seven-day base for both the Dordogne and the Lot...worked out very well, indeed.

P.S. When EKSCRUNCHY recommends The Esplanade in Domme, you'd best take her advice. It's excellent, with a postcard view of the river below.

We stayed in the small but cute town called Daglan, not too far from Domme and Cenac, in a nice old house we rented from Simply-Perigord.com. We liked it a lot, especially the back yard and patio.

I stayed at the Hostellerie de Meysset, about 2 miles north of Sarlat. The outdoor dining area has lovely views of the Vezere valley and the food is very good also. A very laid back kind of place...

Domaine de la Rhue is wonderful, but again, it's not in the Dordogne. To take advantage of the area best, you should probably draw yourself half a circle extending out from Sarlat to the west and south, possibly east.

You cannot walk into town easily from the Hostellerie de Meysset, but yes, it's a picturesque spot.

I'd recommend La Belle Etoile or the Plume d'Oie in La Rocque-Gageac, Domaine de la Barde in Le Bugue, the Esplanade in Domme, or the Vieux Moulin in Les Eyzies.
