Although I do not either hotel personally (from a stay there), I know the Ala well, and have walked through its lobby. I also tried to book a group of 11 teenagers there (all family members - - childrens, cousins and boy friends) together with me and my wife. They adamantly refused the reservation, sayig that "we do not take groups". Arguing got me no where.

Some people will take this as a good thing. I do not hold it against them, and I think that the hotel looks lovely and it's in a goood location.

Best wishes,

Rex
One nice thing about the Hotel Ala is that they have renovated many (by now, perhaps all) of their rooms and they offer several different levels (standard, deluxe, suite, etc.). The newer rooms, with full baths, are nice. Distance from San Marco is about the same, but in opposite directions. Bisanzio doesn't (can't) have a private dock for water taxi arrival; Ala does. From what I know about them, I would pick Hotel Ala, but Bisanzio isn't bad.

I have stayed at the Bisanzio and found it to be a very nice place. It's a short walk to San Marcos but in a quiet area. The thing I liked best was that the staff was very helpful and made excellent restaurant suggestions.
