Does anyone have a decent hotel recommendation in Munich? I don't want a luxury hotel, but don't want a barebones hotel with shared bathrooms, etc. I'll be traveling with my 13 year old daughter, so need a room large enough for us. Clean and safe is important. Thanks for your help!!

Our family of four loved the Hotel Uhland. It's in a nice, quiet, upscale, tree-lined neighborhood, in a sort of retrofitted historic mansion. Our room was large, newly refurbished, new bath, sparkling clean, friendly front desk, great breakfast room and buffet every morning, internet in lobby and complimentary coffee available 24/7. There are even free bikes to borrow and it's a nice neighborhood to ride around in. Good little restaurants nearby, too. It is less than 5 minutes away from the Marienplatz and is clean and nice. We are staying there again this summer.

We have been more than satisfied with the Hotel Kraft, near downtown and the major sights of the city. Clean, good beds, last paid about 110$ equivalent in 2003. Probably a bit more now...no restaurant...but did serve substantial breakfast then.

The Concorde looks like a good deal. Is it air conditioned?

I can't remember if if is airconditioned. I think so since we were there last in the summer. Better check.

What price range are you looking at?

We loved the location (and the breakfast) at the Platzl - but we needed 2 rooms, which really added to the price. BUT - the location is ideal and I felt very safe.

At one point, we let our kids (12 and 14) walk back to the hotel from our dinner restaurant.....okay, it was only around the corner and they were together and we were back there 30 minutes later.....but we (overly protective parents) felt okay with it.

Thanks for such quick responses to my request for Munich hotel information. How important is air conditioning in late July (July 25-28)? Would you make that a consideration in choosing a hotel?

Absolutely! When it's hot in Munich it's also humid, and you need a cool bolt-hole after sightseeing.

The possibilities range from hot+dry to hot+humid or cold or rainy or dry or a mix of the above . In late July there are usually a few warmer (=hot) days, but it could be rather cool as well. Do you need a/c? No.

This is one reason I asked about the Concorde and I also think that the guest rooms at the Platzl (which is in an absolutely excellent location IMO) are not air conditioned.

Munich may not be very hot at that time of year but in my personal experience it will BE very humid which is, IMO, the real reason A/C is so helpful. I would not stay in any Munich hotel in the Summer that didn't have it.

It's not remotly as humid as in Florida or somewhere else in the southern US. Humidity varies considerably for day to day, as usually does the temperature. If the wind comes from the west, it'll be humid, east mean dry air. Usually humidity increases every day until after a few thunderstorms it'll be low again. The air from Russia is dry and hot, if it comes from Scandinavia, it'll be cool ... If somebody could predict this summers weather, he/she'd be a very rich person

We stayed at the Hotel Englischer Garten and it was delightful. On a warm summer's evening, you can stroll through the park itself.

We were in Munich in May of last year, and stayed at Hotel Opera (http://en.venere.com/germany/hotels_....html?ref=3926), and we loved it. It's walking distance to just about everything, and about a block from the U-bahn (1-2 stops from Marienplatz i think - we walked the whole time) if you don't want to walk more than hlaf a mile to a mile. Cute and quiet residential neighborhood. Would stay there again in a heartbeat.

We stayed at the Opera as well, and loved it, but I'd say it tends more to the luxury end of things.

Since you are going with you daughter I would second the "Hotel Uhland" recommendation even though it is a little further away fron Marienplatz. It is close to a U-Bahn station and you can get there quickly or walk and get a feel for the neighborhood. They will make you feel like you are visiting family there. Seems like someone said they have bicycles to rent or borrow.

Another hotel to consider is the "Drei Lowen" near the main train station. I have only gone in the cool or cold seasons so AC was never a consideration.
