I'd like to see how you would feel about being forced to wear a certain type of clothing.

You mean, like in a football uniform? At least a few people each year die while playing football in the heat. The heat gets to athletes all the time, no matter what you are wearing. I have personally puked on the sideline due to heat and pushing my body too far. I've had 4 or 5 concussions from playing sports. I tore my ACL (though I wasn't a minor at that point).

None of that constituted, in any way, child abuse.

Sylvia, I agree. How about the Iraqi Muslim in the US, who ran over his daughter because she was "too Westernized"?

Apres London

I read it in a book. Perhaps I am wrong, but, does not the Ontario Family Law Act recogonize the polygamous marriages of muslim men that were perfomed in their home countries? I understand the polygamy is against the law in Canada - but its recognized if performed in the home country?

How about that Christian that killed his wife, because she cheated on him? Or that Jewish guy that beats his kids.

Ban all Christians! Outlaw all synagogues!

"You mean, like in a football uniform? At least a few people each year die while playing football in the heat."

Well, I stand corrected. Of course, you were the ONLY one wearing that football uniform, right? That is a ridiculous argument.
You weren't running a race covered head to toe while all the OTHER runners wore tanks and shorts, right? (A muslim MAN is allowed to wear what everyone else is wearing; it's only the girl who has to dress like a medievil nun to participate in sports. Because, of course, she is a dirty filthy temptation to otherwise pure men if she isn't totally covered; even if she collapses on the sidelines. Her choice, right?)

And BTW, gourmet, that nonsense "comeback" about christians killing their wives? Here in the US, they get their asses put in jail for that (in Texas, they might even execute him); it's not state-sanctioned "honor" killing, as it is in the world from which these yahoos come.

I volunteered for many years at a legal aid clinic. Anyone who thinks fundamentalist Islam is the exclusive domain of misogyny and domestic violence is living in a dream world.

You still don't address the treatment of women in the Muslim world! I'd like YOU to wear the hijab or burkha! I would rather die then subject my daughter to such degradation! Sylvia, these MEN just don't get it, do they!

Well, it can all be excused I suppose; after all, it's only 1/2 of the human race that they hold virtual slavery due to disgust and fear of their own feelings. No worries for you, right?

As will the Muslim guy that you are so afraid of. But, hey, let's blackball an entire religion because one person does something abhorrent.

You still don't address the treatment of women in the Muslim world!

Since when is this about the treatment of women in the Muslim world? This is about how supposedly liberal democracies in the West treat their minorities. You may think that the majority has the right to impose upon the minority and that the government should join in on the witch hunt, but I don't.

It depends on what you mean by "recognized". The short answer is no. A person can have only one legal spouse.

The Ontario FLA does include polygamous marriage in its definition of spouse, if the marriage is considered valid in the country where it was performed. All this "recognition" does is allow a spouse, as defined by the FLA, to make a claim under the act against their ex-spouse in the event of a relationship breakdown.

Why? Because the province would rather that people get money from their ex-partners than have to pay out welfare.

The "recognition" really only comes into play when the relationship dissolves. As I said earlier, this is to protect the interests of the women (well technically of both parties but we all know it's the women who are disadvantaged in these situations)

Benefits were brought up before- in Ontario you can claim one spouse.

It's really amazing to me all the misinformation that gets spread around about Canada, I had no idea. First health care, now this. Seriously, don't believe everything you read.

Yes, in the US, if they don't lie and send in a teen to take the blame. But not in their own state-sanctioned-murder country.
What on earth makes you say I'm "afraid"?! Dusgusted, sickened, repulsed, sure. But not afraid. They'd better not bring their antediluvian crap beliefs about women anywhere near me or my daughters.
Really, your defense of their treatement of females is unbelievable.

For the record, what Islam actually SAYS about the faith, like actual Christianity, is a far cry from what leaders of those faiths actually say and do. I'm not tarring a religion with any brush, just the leaders and interpreters of those religions, and the state-run countries who enforce those twisted, bastardized interpretations.

I'm not defending anything, really. I just don't think that governments should make laws favoring one religion over another. How I feel, personally, about Islam really has nothing to do with it.

"The debate is now ostensibly about culture, rather than religion, but that is only because most bigots are cowards and unwilling to admit the true nature of their fears and biases. Frankly, I think it is sickening the lengths that European political parties (and some citizens, apparently) go to, to excuse their intolerance and bigotry."
ok. How DO you feel about Saudi Arabia? For example. (But let us know after you and a female friend trot down the street in shorts, hair uncovered (wearing a cruxifix maybe, or driving a car!)
