Lyon Festival of Lights (Dec 5-8)

Anyone going to the Festival of Lights in Lyon next month?

For those unfamiliar with the event, it's 4 magical evenings with nearly 80 sound-and-light shows throughout the city, many of them absolutely stunning. The streets of the town are turned over to the people -- a family-friendly party each night. I went a few years ago, was amazed, am headed back this year.

Some scenes from last year's festival: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z67zNKkWWcg

I wish I could. We visited Lyon for the first time earlier this year and really enjoyed it. Such a beautiful city.

Was it due to terrorist threats? If so, how sad.

I believe that it was canceled because of general security concerns as opposed to a specific threat. The security would have had to be enormous for the festival -- think of >1 million people on the streets for 4 nights -- and they likely figured that there just weren't enough resources available.

I'll still go to Lyon; I can think of worse places to spend a few days.

We went to the Fete des Lumieres last year and really enjoyed it. It was truly spectacular.

From their Facebook page, perhaps there were some general security concerns but also a concern of celebrating at a tragic time. They will have a one night fete in honor of the victims on December 8.

Just came back from my annual Christmas trip to Lyon and thought people might be interested to know that the Festival of lights did go ahead, but in a much more subdued fashion than has become common in recent years.

As was the way the festival initially started, people put candles on their windowsills, church steps and around fountains and carried them in the street.

There was also a very tasteful (well it is Lyon!) projection in memory of the victims of the Paris attacks and the whole event was actually very close to how it used to be before the large-scale projections and installations took over.

Here's a short gallery I found online

Plans for next year's festival are already well underway, so here's hoping the usual pomp and circumstance will be able to take place.

Happy 2016 everyone.
