If she is flying into Heathrow, she can take the Heathrow Express train into central London, which only takes 15 minutes. If she is going into Gatwick that takes a lot longer. Would recommend a guided open top bus tour, see www.city-sightseeing.com.

Whatever she does I hope she enjoys it.

If your friend doesn't need her sightseeing spoon-fed, I recommend she buy a one-day Underground/bus Travelcard at Heathrow for £6.30 and use it for getting around.

She can ride to Hyde Park Corner on the Tube (about 40 minutes) and then walk past Buckingham Palace to Victoria and start exploring by bus. Here are two maps she can use to jumpstart her planning:

tell her that if she IS flying into Gatwick that "a lot longer" to get into London is a whopping 15 minutes more!

And even tho' it does take 15 minutes longer from LGW - when you get there you are at Victoria station - which is much closer to most of the sites. It is walking distance to Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, the river etc.

The Heathrow Express DOES get you to town in 15 minutes - but it drops you at Paddington station which is farther from things she'd want to see.

So actual transit time ends up about the same - or maybe even a bit faster from Gatwick.
