Sorry, perhaps I should have explained the background!
When the "incident" happened (or, thankfully - didn't happen), everything was banned from carry-on and that included books. They even banned books, mgazines and papers that were bought airside. JK Rowling's trip occured at the height of the restrictions and as such she was also subject to no paper on board. Perhaps the airline couldn't afford being sued by her should they lose her manuscript (or more likely have it duplicated)??!!!

Yes, when the original crackdown on carryon occurred, books were not allowed, neither were ipods etc. This restriction was removed very shortly afterwards. My post was prior to the announcement.
