Is 7 Hours enough time in Munich?

I have a layover in Munich (MUC)on September 15th on my way to Rome. Does anyone think a 7 hour layover in Munich (assuming the flight is on time) is enough time to do some exploring? I rather not hang around the airport unless I have to. Are there any fun, nearby towns to explore? I am hoping I have enough time to do a quick trip to the Marienplatz? Please advise...thank you!

The S-Bahn (S8 line) from the airport to Marienplatz takes about 40 minutes and runs very frequently, so that should leave you a few hours or so to explore the central downtown area.

Definitely head into Munich. The S-bahn is really easy, leaves right from the airport and will take you downtown.

If you have less time due to a late arrival, Friesen is a nice little town, not far from the airport, also accessible by S-Bahn.

I've taken the S-8 a couple times. Fast and reliable way to get into the city quickly. Go for it.

Munich is nice (was just there in May), but not worth a missed connection.

If you are by yourself, buy a Single Adult All Zones Day Ticket for €10. It cost less than a round trip into Munich by S-bahn and can also be used for any other conveyances (S-/U-bahn, trams, streetcars) in the MVV while you are there. For up to 5 people, buy a Partner All Zones day Ticket for €18.

A day ticket should have two arrows and the words, "Hier ENTWERTEN" on one end. Put that end, face up, into one of the stamping machines as you enter the station to validate the ticket.

I did just that with a 6 hr layover. Had a dinner in Marienplatz and walked around the Marienplatz and came back to the airport with plenty of time left. I think the plane landed around 3pm and I was in a cafe at Marienplatz by 4pm.
Of course, I did all the research before hand so no time was wasted once I got there. I knew where to find the S-bahn ticket machine, what kind of ticket to get, how much cash I needed, how to validate the ticket, where in Marienplatz the cafe was located, and which S-Bahn I needed to catch to be back at airport on time.

Here is the S-Bahn schedule:

Since you have 5 hours in downtown, you'll have enough time to go beyond Marienplatz. Maybe walk northeast toward the nearby city palace called Residenz and tour the interior or just the garden. A major art museum worth seeing is the Alte Pinakothek northwest of Marienplatz (a bit further out). There is also the nearby Viktualienmarkt just south of Marienplatz. Here's a map of downtown

Go for it! Munich is one of my favorite cities. You'll really like the Marienplatz....sit outside, have a bite to eat, maybe a beer or coffe, and people watch. Just be careful that you don't like it too much that you forget your connection! You should have plenty of time, though.
