international driver's permits

A rental car agency here in the U.S. suggested an international driver's permit, that I didn't have to have it, but it was a good idea. I tried AAA, the driver's license bureau and Avis Rental Car, none of them had any info. about it or knew where to obtain one. So, if any of you could help me that would be great, thank you.

Try AAA again - it has always been the primary source of IDPs all over America.

But aren't you going to Ireland? It would be a silly waste of time and money to get an IDP for Ireland, as the IDP is nothing more than an official translation of your American license into the language of another country. Since the language of Ireland is English.........duh, no need for a translation.

Yeah, you need to check the requirements of the country where you are going.

I can't believe AAA knows nothing about this presuming you are talking about the US auto club.

Got an international license from AAA with no trouble for the last trip. Just bring in two passport sized photos (Got mine from WalMart) and your regular driver's license. The AAA website will give you all the information you need. Costs a bit, $15 as I remember.

Ireland does not require an IDP.

Why anyone thinks advice from a US car hire company about the civilised world is worth listening to beggars belief.

This is what the Irish government says about it:

I realize this may be a moot issue for you now, but for other folks, you can also have AAA take the photos if you ever do need a permit. They offer a reduced rate of around $8 for it-generally cheaper than other places and you don't need to make the extra stop for the photo someplace else.

You get free passport pictures if you are a gold member of AAA too.

Looks like you are dealing with ignorance from people who should know better. See http://tinyurl.com/3bc2ax for what you need to know.

You get free photos if you take them with your own digital camera too. The State Department gives specifics with a template.
