The Hotel Riva is a nice little one-star hotel, located at the confluence of two small canals. I don't know if it is around $180, though.

For great dining at the Zattarre (sp?), the La Calcina has a nice outdoor patio with a gorgeous view and great food/service. The hotel sent us a discount coupon for this outdoor restaurant, because they didn't have a room for us.

Really? I've walked into the Danieli without being stopped. I did end up having a drink in the lobby bar. But nobody gave me a second look.

Absolutely not true. I know plenty of people who manage to find very good accommodations for around $120 a night.

Ah, NYCFood, define 'good'. It is a subjective term, not an objective one. What someone considers good and what my wife considers good are not necessarily one and the same thing are they.

Works like 'good' or 'reasonable priced' etc. are all meaningless unless you give your definition of them. To say people have found 'very good' accommodations for around $120 per night IN Venice tells me your idea of 'good' is not the same as mine.

NYCFood; All anyone has to do is to on booking.com/venice and find any number of hotels rated 'good' or 'very good' for what the OP is willing to pay. Comments made by many.

I don't think anyone cares about what this one poster in particular thinks.

Ain't that the truth, Iris? Research has been my middle name in over 30+ years of travel. Me don't like lazy. Granted, it's been a long time since I stayed in cheap hotels, but I know plenty of kids or young married couples who want clean, friendly, nice, and air conditioning for under $150. Your budget is what it is. I never tell friends to spend more than they have.

From what I've seen, Venice doesn't have disgusting hotels, even near the train station. Cheaper properties may lack charm, fabulous antique furniture, and high-quality fabrics, but many places are well run by thoughtful, caring people who realize that the vast majority of tourists on a budget don't spend much time in their room.

Obnoxious trolls have been on Fodor's since I joined. What can you do but ignore. This is life on an internet board. I've learned not to engage.

I was about to dis-believe NYCFood's comment of $150 a night. But then I checked the Hotel Ai do Mori, where we stayed six years ago, and loved it.

Minimum rate - 50 euro a night
Maximum rate - 150 euro a night

In my opinion, a "good" hotel. Goodness is in the eye of the beholder, and that place met our needs at that time, so by definition was "good".

Excuse me, but there are some very nice hotels near the train station, the Hotel Ca'Nigra, for example.

It is to the left of the Scalzi Bridge.

Keith and I stayed at Palazzo Cendon off of Lista di Spagna and our canal-view room was HUGE.

We could have conducted an aerobics class in that room it was so big.

People who make blanket comments about train-station areas (Termini for example also) usually don't know a city well enough to be dishing out advice.
