Humor me: seeking a good hotel in Venice near $180/night

I realize this question has been asked...but I need an updated response:

Traveling to Venice in early October. Tell me if you loved where you stayed in Venice or what to avoid. Share the names of authentic and delicious Italian restaurants in Venice.

Thanks!

We enjoyed Hotel Villa del Palme but it's on Lido Isle. You might look at Hotel Hesperia, I've heard good comments about it though have never stayed there.

Try this. www.booking.com/venice

For a couple?

What do you mean by a "good" hotel - amenities, atmosphere, room size, etc.

worldinabag Aug 2nd, 2013 06:56 PM

Try the Hotel Vagon - http://www.hotelalvagon.com. Room with a canal view for your money.

Palazzo Cendon near Tre Archi.

Hotel Ca'Dogaressa also near Tre Archi and the Jewish ghetto of Cannereggio.

You can easily walk to Santa Lucia train station and Piazzale Roma from either hotel, or take the Alilaguna at Guglie Stop.

Hotel Danieli to stay.

For lunch, Harry's Bar for it's history and drinking a Bellini is mandatory of course.

For dinner, Osteria Boccadoro or Locanda Cipriani.

rialtogrl Aug 2nd, 2013 09:56 PM

I'm not sure the Hotel Danieli is even remotely in the ballpark of $180. Is it?

La Calcina is a wonderful hotel on the Giudecca canal that is within your budget.

Pepper_von_snoot Aug 3rd, 2013 07:16 AM

Please tell us all how you are getting a room at Danieli for $180 a night?

Coupons? ROFL!

Locanda Cipriani is in Torcello.

More convenient and more affordable restaurants---Promessi Spossi, La Zucca, Pizza Ae Ochi on the Zattere.

The $180 will just about cover a round of Bellini's at Harry's Bar...

<The $180 will just about cover a round of Bellini's at Harry's Bar...>

Or a couple of club sandwiches and a bottle of wine at the resturant on the top of the Danieli.

Improviser Aug 3rd, 2013 09:27 AM

They dont' offer club sandwiches rialtogrl. ;-)

Bellinis are now around 20E I believe Gordon. Hardly $180 a round.

Here is a true story of a visit to Harry's I made with my wife a few years back. We were staying in the Relais Villa Fiorita in Treviso and went into Venice for the day.

As it was early morning and cool but expected to hit around 30C in the afternoon, we started out in long pants. They were convertible pants (legs zip-off) and by noon we had indeed taken the legs off as the day warmed up.

Without thinking we walked in to Harry's Bar. I have been before but it was my wife's first visit. Immediately, we were told 'no shorts allowed'. I actually knew that but had simply not thought about it.

I tried to joke about having brought my wife 10,000 miles to have a Bellini and surely we could sit at the bar. I didn't expect to get a positive response really, just a 'I'm sorry sir, we cannot make an exception'. In other words a gracious refusal. Instead I got a rather rude refusal. 'assolutamente no'.

So I said to him, 'fine, we will be back in TWO minutes' and we walked out, zipped on the pant legs and returned within the two minutes. The look on his face was priceless.

Several people sitting at tables had heard the first exchange as had the bartender. There were a few grins going on. I said 'I'd like 2 seats at the bar now.' He graciously (joke) motioned for us to go ahead.

As we sat down, the bartender placed a Bellini in front of my wife and asked with a smile, 'for you sir?' He had obviously figured out what was about to happen and had mixed her drink while we were outside.

Yes the Danieli is a bit more than $180 but free using points if you've got them. ;-)

Sorry Pepper_Von meant to let you know it's part of the Starwood group. So coupons, no, points, yes. ROFL.

Guess you learned something new today huh.

Which is so very helpful if the OP doesn't have points.

Catito: Hotels.com is another site you can try. Plug in your dates an then you can set your exact price range. ( the only hotel I was going to recommend I know has no availability since I tried to book it in Oct myself and it is booked up almost the entire month.)

Thin - were all of the restaurants you listed on the Zattarre? outdoor seating? which would be your favorite? we will have one evening for dinner in Venice so I want to make the most excellent choice - it doesn't have to be "fine dining", just good italian food, hopefully in an outdoor setting.

Grazie!

I am going to ignore the fray above, and suggest the Hotel Al Ponte Mocenigo, highly rated (#3 out of many Venice hotels)
S. Croce 2063. Located steps away from the Grand Canal.

A moderate priced restaurant near the hotel is Cafe Muro.

Pepper_von_snoot Aug 3rd, 2013 07:57 PM

La Zucca has outdoor seating. It is located between Campo San Giacomo dell' Orio and the San Stae Vaporetto Stop.

This is a tiny restaurant, but the food is imaginative.

Pizza Ae Ochi is on the Zattere next to the San Basilio Vaporetto Stop.

There are also many restaurants along the Fondamente Nova that have tables along the waterfront.

Lots of outside restaurant seating along the Fondamenta di Cannereggio/Guglie Stop.

Lots of places to eat or have a spritz in the Rialto Market.

I like Al Merca for a spritz and sandwich. There is a bench outside you can sit on.

Same with Do Mori.

Tons of places outside on Via Garibaldi in Castelo. Hosteleria Franz is probably most famous.

And there is Paradiso garden restaurant near the Public Gardens/Biennale Vaporetto Stop.

Have fun.

Harry's Bar may be interesting for the history, if you are turned on by a bar that opened in 1931. Florians and Quadri opened in 1700 or thereabouts.

But If Harry's is one's idea of history, then McDonalds may be a concept of cuisine, and Disney the idea of culture. It all depends on one's point of view.

I suppose that if one is going to do the Harry's bar thing, engaging with one's inner Hemingway, then the zip off pants should be accessorised with some sort of cartridge belt, or better, a shooting vest. Something like
