How is the Hotel del Corso in Sorrento?
Is anyone familiar with the Hotel del Corso in Sorrento? It is recommended by Rick Steves and it looks good from their website. But I would like to hear from some of you on what you think of it.
Thanks.
-- Ainsley

I spent 3 nights at the Hotel del Corso this past June, it is a Rick Steves recommended hotel. I'm not very picky about hotels, but the next time I'm in Sorrento I will gladly pay more and stay at a better hotel. Although the Hotel del Corso is very centrally located and the room I had was rather spacious, the bed and furnishings were a bit old and worn, the bathroom was in desperate need of updating specially the shower.

Hi Bill!!

It's Michelle with the Venice question. Did you check out any other places in Sorrento??? Where would you stay next time? We will be at Il Nido next month(with my mom and sister). At this point of the trip, we will have a car - going to my grandparents home town in the south.

I have alot of questions for you!!

Michelle

Hi Michelle,
Small world, looks like we're following each other over several threads. Originally I was going to stay at El Nido too because I had heard good things about it and the owners. But since I did not have car, the Hotel del Corso was more convenient and so I chose it. Since you have a car, I think your choice of El Nido is probably an excellent one. Please let us know how you like it.

Hotel del Corso is in a good position, right on the main road, 5-10 min walk to the train/bus station. We stayed opposite there, at the Palazzo Starace (if you do a search on Fodors you will find some comments on this place). There are lots of shops and restaurants right next door.
Kay

Whether you have a car or not, Il Nido is a good choice (especially if you do have a car and need a place to park it). If you're staying there, I doubt you'd use your car much; I would just take their shuttle and use the buses. I have never seen scarier driving in my life as I saw around Sorrento!! My husband and I couldn't believe it. He was even scared! And we come from from Massachusetts, where WE have a bad reputation!

I thought about staying at Corso, and when I saw it in Sorrento, I was glad we stayed at Il Nido instead. Looked a little noisy and dumpy, and I am a serious budget traveler, so most people on this board definitely would not approve!

We were by far the youngest guests at Il Nido. Mostly middle aged people with more money than I have, but this place is very affordable. It would have been nice to stay in downtown Sorrento, but the peaceful night of sleep was wonderful!

Kay: I am staying at Starace 10/4 - 8. How was it? I'm not picky, but want something clean and fairly comfortable. Did you have a balcony? How about an elevator? Is the staff friendly and do they speak English? Would you stay there again? Thanks for any info you can give me.

For Carol:

We liked Palazzo Starace (you say 'star-arch-ee) and would stay there again, central, comfortable and very clean but nothing flashy. Water pressure in the shower left a bit to be desired.
This is no elevator, it's in a very old building, there were 3 flights of marble stairs to our floor. They did have a box like contraption on a pulley for luggage.
Our room had a balcony overlooking the main street. It's not a hotel, just rooms, so we only saw the owner when we arrived (they had to let us in and give us a front door and room key) and then when we paid. They wanted cash by the way. The person we saw hardly spoke any English but we managed. The owners live on a floor above.
Breakfast was a croissant and coffee (typical Italian breakfast though the Italians usually just have coffee) across the road at the cafe. Hope this helps.
Kay
