Hotel in Trier ?

We are planning a trip through the Mosel and I think maybe a night in Trier is a good idea.Any great recomendations for hotels and dining? We will be driving, and enjoy quiet evenings sipping wine or guzzlin' beer after a full day.

Hi, grebbs:

You'll enjoy Trier. At least my friends and I did when we were there a few years ago; however, we didn't spend the night, so I can't help you out.

But have you done a search on this board?
It's easy, and I bet you get some hits that will help you.

We stayed in the Porta Nigra - which has a great location - views of it out of our wndows and a 3-minute walk to the center of the old town. But it had all the charm of a roadside holiday inn - and was in need of updating.

I note it has been sold to another chain - and hopefully they have updated the whole thing - we were there 3 years ago. The food was mediocre at best (trapped one night by a downpour) but there were lots of cute/not bad restaurants in the old part of the town.

The hotel also had a casino - which was deserted when we were there.

In 1996 I stayed at Hotel Villa Hugel which was excellent. It's about a 15 minute hike to the town center but well worth it. We had dinner in town but enjoyed a lovely breakfast and wine in the hotel sitting at a window table with a beautiful view. Owner very nice. It's very small; more like a B&B.

You will pass many sights during your hike into/out of town. Don't know if they have a website as we just found it when we drove in. We also took a city walking tour while there which is definitely worth it. [email protected]
