help hotel ripping me off
So while looking for hotel i came across the sint nichlass hotel in amsterdam. At first they quoted me a price of 70 euros a night for 2 people, (this was 2 months ago, and i trashed the e-mail) I recently got another quote from them and the price went up to 85 euros a night, (this was 2 days ago) then yesterday when i made the reservation they told me it was 95 euros a night! WHAT is going on? has anyone had this type of exerpence before? I sent them a copy of the second e-mail with the 85 euro quote, and told them that they need to meet their claim or i will find another hotel. I am still waiting to hear from them.

Looking at their Web site, their rooms have a range of prices. I suspect their cheaper rooms were available when you first inquired, but have since rented-out.
Don't see how anybody is ripping you off-you are free to decline and pick another hotel.

Dear ill
Two months ago they still had the 70E room available, today they nly have the 95E room available.
You are not being 'ripped off'. You are lucky that they didn't change the price on you *after* you arrived. That's a ripoff.

Another possibility is that hotels often change their prices around the end of the year for the next year. I've often booked in October or November at one year's prices for the following summer, and even though the prices go up, if I've already booked they honor those old rates since I confirmed at them. That could certainly be the case with the prices quoted two months ago. And yes, with different prices of rooms, the cheapest ones are likely to now be booked.

Don't try to book straight from the hotel, you get better deals from Internet dealers. Do a search "hotel+Amsterdam", and you will find tons of alternatives and good deals. Just be prepared to pay in advance.
For example last summer I booked a hotel from Stockholm through Internet, and payed 91 euros when hotel's own price was 120 euros. And again this November I booked a room from Istanbul. The hotel asked for 130 dollars, Internet dealer asked 56 dollars. I took it and payed in advance. When the next day I found another dealer offering the same hotel with 47 dollars, I stopped looking in order not to feel deceived and decided that I was happy with 56 dollars.

Incidental Lesson #1: Save all correspondence concerning an upcoming trip until you return home. I make a separate email folder and throw it all in there. And I take print outs of hotel confirmations etc with me.
I think previous posters are correct. If you didn't make the reservation, the hotel has no obligation to hold the price. In fact, quotes that I have received almost always have some sort of disclaimer that until the reservation is actually made, the price may change without notice.

I understand the 2 month difference from 70 to 85, but what makes me mad is that in less then 24 hours the price went up 10 euros, i emailed them the request, and buy the time i checked my email to see their reply and replyed back to them with my credit card the price went up, and in the email they told me i could have the room at that price but they needed my creditcard info, I sent them my info and when i received they told me the price would now be 95 euros(a 10 euro jump, even thought they promised me the 85 euro price) I do plan on finding a new hotel. I just think that if they tell you one price they should stick with that price.

I can completely understand your frustration but quite frankly as posted before, no rates are secure until you have booked and confirmed. If you think 20 Euros is bad, try air fare.. I have seen the cost of a trip double in the 3 hours between first checking the schedule and then deciding to book. Often times either the lower price rooms book up first, or they adjust due to demand. One time the same thing happened to me, and when I called to find out why, the hotel replied that a gigantic convention had just scheduled in the town during the dates of our stay, and all the rooms were booking fast and at a premium.
Rule of thumb.. if the price is right then grab it.
