Drive time between Munich and Vienna

We are planning on driving between these 2 cities with a 2 hour stop in Salzburg, and would like to know approximately how long it will take, and what is the fasteset or best route. Does drivetime make a difference on a weekday or a weekend? Also, any recommendations of another stop along the way? As always, Thanks in advance for your input.

I've driven between those cities a few times. If I were you, I would allow for 4 to 5 hours of driving time if you are a fast driver, or 6 hours if you are an average driver. There are plenty of places to stop, but it depends on the route. On the best route, I would suggest possible stops at one of the villages south of Linz -- Steyr, Kremsmunster, Bad Hall, etc. Good luck.

Hi; We have driven that route a few times and I agree with Wayne, it will take you at least 5 hours between cities. Just stay on the major motorway after Salzburg. www.viamichelin.com Another place to visit is Durnstein, a small town that would not take too much time. Melk is great, but Melk would take too much time. ENJOY Iris

Not sure what you're going to do in 2 hours in Salzburg. To see anything there you need at least a full day and possibly several to see most sights and get out into the countryside. I think just getting into the town, finding a place to park your car and making your way to wherever and back - then return to the highway would take most of your 2 hours.

As for Munchen to Wien - we do it in about 4.5 hours with a 10 minute stop. But we're definitely not slowpokes.

HI; 'nytraveler' makes a good comment. If you need to stop, Durnstein or perhaps some of the towns Wayne mentioned would be a '2 hour' stop. Iris

Thanks for all the replies. I have taken your advice and will save Salzburg for another time. It looks like Durnstein will be our stop.

While in Durnstein, do stop at the Richard the Lionhearted Hotel for lunch or a drink. If the weather's good, sit out on the terrace for a beautiful view over the Danube.

The driving time Salzburg - Vienna takes about 3 hours.
This depends however on the day traveled and time of the year.
Example - in winter many ski vacationers travel Saturday or Sunday on this route and traffic slows . The same applies to summer weekends.
Also note that road improvement work continues on various sections of this autobahn A-1 .
Currently an approximately 10- 12 kilometer sectin has constricted traffic lanes , effectively making it one lane in each direction. Often slow moving truck traffic causes good back ups in traffic and prolongs time needed.
Probably new roadwork this summer.

The drive Munich - Salzburg takes about 1 1/2 hours - 2 hours from the area of the airport.
This autobahn is often overfull of traffic winter and summer weekends especially. Also note that several areas have restricted speed limits( 100 km or less) and often just 2 lanes in each direction. As this is a busy truck route , they effectively restrict the right slow lane for their use.

A highway use sticker ( Vignette ) is mandatory for driving on austrian majorroadways - cost 7.70 euro for 10 days and available at or near the german austrian border.

Durnstein is beautiful , but at least 30 minutes driving time from the autobahn . You should be aware of the extra time needed for such a visit. in addition it is very small and can be vry conjested with tourists, bikers included. parking is limited to that out of the village as the village has just one street and that is a restricted pedestrian zone.Melk Abbey is just 5 minutes from the autobahn and in fact can be seen as you approach on this roadway- a magnificent Benedictine Abbey with superb views of the danube too.
