Day trips from Seville?

Going to have two full days in Seville towards the end of September, 3 nights in all.

Will arrive from Granada through Cordoba on one day, so may arrive in the afternoon or the evening, depending on how much time is spent in Cordoba. Then have two full days thereafter.

So aside from the Cathedral and the Alcazar, is there anything else to stay in Seville the rest of the time? Mainly interested in the architecture and the settings.

So some of the ideas for maybe a day or day and a half of excursions would be Ronda, Cadiz, Arcos de la Frontera.

Hi, scrb. I'm going research for an upcoming trip, so I'm hardly the expert, but there's definitely more to see in Seville. I'm also into architecture. Have you read about the Casa de Pilatos and Palacio de Lebrija in Seville?

For a daytrip, we're going to Italica, the ruins of a Roman city where Trajan was born. It's a quick ride (30 min?) via bus from Seville.

And, we're also taking a day-trip with Paul McGrath to see the white villages, since we won't have a car: www.theotherspain.galeon.com. From there, we're heading to Ronda for a couple of days. Ronda is also easily accessed by bus from Seville, if you won't have a car.

Have fun!

I think you will find enough to see and do in Sevilla, but if you haven't seen the White Villages yet on your tour, a day trip is highly recommended.

An easy day trip (with a car) would be to go to Arcos de la Frontera, Medina-Sidonia, Vejer de la Frontera, maybe a some relaxing for an hour on the beaches near Vejer, e.g. Cabo de Trafalgar (yes, as in Trafalgar Square), and back to Sevilla. If you still have time, or want to skip the beach, you could add Cadiz in the afternoon hours.

There's plenty to see in Seville for more than 2 days. I would do some more reading to see all of the options available - esp if you're interested in architecture.

We enjoyed seeing the royal dancing horses in Jerez, one hour trip from Seville.

I'm undecided about whether to hang out in Seville all those days and maybe take shorter trips like Italica. One of the lodging options is to stay at a hotel with a rooftop swimming pool, which costs more than just staying at a simpler place.

On my last day before returning to the US, I would be driving from Seville to Malaga. So I could go to Ronda and maybe even Marbella before arriving at Malaga for the night. That wouldn't cut into one of the days I've planned for Seville at all, but then it would not leave as much time for Malaga (Picasso museum is one thing I had in mind).

My first trip to Andalucia and I'm trying to squeeze everything into 6 full days so maybe the white villages and Cadiz will have to wait for another time too.

Two days in Seville is not enough time. I could spend two days walking around, stopping for tapas and people watching. That's the kind of city it is. Of course Cathedral, Alcazar, Museum of Bellas Artes, tour of the bullring, and Plaza de Espana are good sights to see.

I agree with Egbert. I'm not quite sure what you mean by hanging out in Sevilla "all these days" if you're only talking 2 days! I'd advise any first time traveler to Sevilla to budget for 3 days.

arcos, medina, vejer, cadiz is so not an easy day trip; try three days and you might get close: you're on holiday, not competing in a motor rally. so forget the side trips (apart from italica, which is a good idea, close enough to get a taxi if you don't want to use the bus and fascinating, though the last time i was there, one may, it was pretty hot and at the moment temps in sevilla are topping 40C so i wouldn't recommend going after early morning.
as for sevilla itself, there's loads to see as you have discovered already. aside from the big hitters, you could try the alameda de hercules, recentl;y redeveloped area near the river, full of great bars and restaurants and has a really good laid back atmosphere; across the river is the old gipsy quarter of triana which has plenty of atmosphere, a lovely produce market, excellent little tapas bars and plenty of pottery! might also find some flamenco there - impromptu, late night in small bars is best and most authentic. at the far end of triana is a big park which is hardly used by tourists but is really lovely. another, far better known park is the maria luisa back on the other side of the river. beautiful, good for picnics, lots of shade, bikes for hire, row boats for hire in the plaza de espana which is mind blowing (and stood in for cairo in 'lawrence of arabia'). i also really like the macarena district which has no real sights but is just a greta place to wander around. shopping is excellent, and not just limited to one area of the city; also, if you're there over a weekend, think about going to a football match. sevilla are one of spain's top teams, their rivals, real betis, were relegated last season but still worth seeing. for me, the betis stadium has more atmosphere but both are real experiences.

Oh I wanted to see a football match. But FC Sevilla are playing before and after I'm there, including a Champions League match.

Yeah maybe I'm underestimating the distances and how fast I can move on some of the roads.

My ambitious days are going to be coming to Seville from Granada, via Cordoba and leaving Seville, possibly via Ronda and maybe one of the coast towns.

May make for impossibly long days.

And the recommendation of the White Villages tour above sounds great too, but it also would take a whole day. I guess September is one of the most popular seasons. Weather seems warm enough in March/April but supposedly wetter.

So return trips are something to look forward to.

The question was IF you want to get out of Sevilla for one day, what could be potential day trip destinations. Neither that you HAD to do it, nor that you HAD to visit all three towns I mentioned. If you search the forums you will find people who think that one day is enough for Sevilla, and others who go there again and again and spend one week without getting bored.

And Ronda is, of course, also extremely nice and the drive there will also be a good appetizer to get you interested in the hinterland for your next trip. But you are right in assuming that this may not leave enough time to visit the Picasso museum in Málaga at the end of the day.

well you have sevilla v mallorca midweek sept 23, which should be easy enough to get tickets for, then on the weekend of Oct 4, Sevilla v Real Madrid, which will be very tough to see; in the segunda division you have betis-cartagena on the weekend of sept 27...

Hmm, I must have misread the schedule.

Sept. 23, I'm leaving Granada, driving to Cordoba so sightsee for a few hours, including maybe lunch, and then onward to Sevilla. Estimated that I'd reach Sevilla (will be staying in Barrio Santa Cruz) around 17:00.

Game is when, 20:00? I'll have to dig around to see where to reserve tickets online.

Hmm cheapest I found was 60 Euro for an end zone seat. And if the visiting club was a hot ticket like Real Madrid, it would be almost double.

Probably cheaper locally but maybe there's a bar which will put on the game?

Italica is great their theatre and ruins are really amazing. I did it in an afternoon and my wife stayed in Seville. We do this once a week at least on our travels. A little alone time is good.

depends on whether the game is on tv live...there are normally two live games on a sat. night, one at 20.00 and the other at 22.00
if it's on a sunday it may start at 17.00 but possibly at 20.00.
which date are you intown? for mallorca, you can turn up at the ground a couple of hours beforehand and buy tickets at the office. for madrid, no chance. and don't buy from scalpers.
you coulld contact sevilla fc press/publicity office direct and ask their advice about buying direct/online.
bars everywhere in the city will show the game and the atmosphere will be top notch. might be worth heading for a bar in centro district or close to sanchez pizjuan stadium - more locals there; the sta cruz bars will be full or turistas...
i am assuming you're asking about sevilla only.

as for the time of games, they don't publish the final schedule until the week of the game but i would have though madrid is likely to be on a sat. best way to find out is to buy one of the two daily football papers which has the listings every day - Marca or As.

I will be arriving on the afternoon of the Mallorca game. Probably have to get my bearings a bit and see if there's time to make it over. Looks like a couple of kilometers east from where I'll be.
