We are visiting Spain in April. Upon looking at rental cars, I see that there is a distinction made for drivers over 70. I am 71, and my husband is 73. I cannot find if there is a surcharge, and if so, what it is. Has anyone over 70 rented a car recently at Madrid airport? Could you tell me the policy you dealt with? Thanks.

It depends on the rental company as well as the marketing channel you used. The charge or retrictions, if any, for a specific booking would show up in your quote and in terms and conditions you can read before clicking the final ok button.

France isn't Spain, so what happened in France doesn't matter. I know there are some countries where limits on common, I think Ireland is one.

Having said that, I have never seen of such a limit in Spain so for anyone to help, you need to say where this site is where you see this distinction, becuase I've never seen that on any main car rental companies' website nor on Autoeurope, for Spain. But I've only considered Avis, Hertz and Europcar so maybe some other one does. But I thought the limit was just you weren't allowed to rent. If it's a surcharge, it's usually around 25 euro a day for young ages, as an idea (less than 25).

As far as I am aware, the limit is set by the rental car agency; Hertz, Avis, Europcar, etc., but it's not something you need to worry about. If you're over the age limit, say 75, they will add the suppliment, which shouldn't be too much.

Note: when renting a car, they don't normally ask for your birthday, just your age. Round down if you want.

When I book a car for a client I have to sometimes guess their age when I don't have the information in front of me and don't want to bother them with a call. The agent where you pick up the car might say something if he/she feels you're much older that you look, but unless you're really old looking, I don't think they'll care.

They'll care if you have an accident and they discover you've been economical with the truth! I can't believe that you just guess the age of your clients when you're booking a rental car for them.

We know who our clients are, but you don't have to be precise about the age when booking a car unless they are under 25 (and we don't work with clients under 25). The rental agent does check their drivers license and passport before handing over the keys. They also have a credit card should anything happen.

Be sure to have an International Driver's Permit. Some car rental agencies ask for them, most don't. But if you are stopped by police they will get cranky if you do not have one. Also carry a second pair of glasses (if you wear them) while driving. Once again if stopped the police can get cranky if you do not have them.
