Best Day of the Week to Fly?

My daughter, who is in the army and stationed in the Netherlands is expecting my first grandchild in Sept. and I would like to go visit. Of course, fares are pretty high these days. I prefer leaving mid week and coming home on a monday so I have two full weekends, but I'm wondering it that effects me negatively when it comes to price as well as availability. Have you guys found that certain days of the week are better to fly in to and out of Amsterdam? I'm on a very tight budget and to be honest, don't know that I can afford to go at all, but sure would like to. Any tips you might have regarding finding the best fares using days of the week, or anything else for that matter, would be appreciated. TIA!

Go to www.itasoftware.com use the =/- 1 day and it will find the lowest fares for you.

I don't know if all airline websites do this, but British Air will give you a calendar with prices for each day in a two-week span for the overseas portion of your flight (put London as your destination, and choose "+/- seven days&quot. It is amazing how much they vary. For the times I was looking, Tuesday seemed to be the best departure day, but that may not hold true consistently.

Mike, I'd be pretty flexible as far as when. I was thinking about a 9/27 departure and a 10/10 return, but I just pulled that out of my hat basically as I don't get more vacation time till 9/25.

I just checked with ITA for some flights that I'm personally interested in taking, LAX/DUB/CDG/LAX. They came up with a fare of $735 while going direct to the Orbitz website showed a fare of $626 for the same early October travel dates.

My point is to checked all available websites. Mike

And I recently heard someone say that Monday flights are often less expensive, so wondered if anyone has more insight into this question? Looking for a general rule of thumb, not cheapest price for a given flight on a specific date! Thank you.

Hi rap,

Usually, Tues, Wed, Thurs are the cheapest days to fly.

However, I have gotten good deals on Sunday and Monday.

You just have to keep looking.

Check www.mobissimo.com and www.kayak.com.

YOu have to check air fares on a particular airline and the dates you want to find the best fare, don't not look at something because you think it's the wrong day. I've seen fares cheaper on certain days than others on virtually every day of the week, except maybe Friday.

Good for you, rapunzll! Make sure you leave plenty of leeways in terms of days both before and after, just in case the baby wants to see grandma earlier/later than the due date. Both of my kids were overdue 10days+, and my folks were getting nervous that they might have to fly home before I gave birth. (In the end, they got to hold the babies a few days before their return dates).
