Barcelona hotel: Prestige Paseo de Gracia
Is anyone familiar with this hotel? I discovered it on the travel-in-spain website. It's a new 4 star hotel located on the Paseo de Gracia and it looks very nice. I'm wondering if I should consider it for my trip to Barcelona in October.
Thanks.
Diane

I think you're the first to mention it on this board! Looks very nice on the website: http://www.prestigepaseodegracia.com/
I know the area is recommended by our "Spain experts". I'm staying in lower-budget lodging in the neighborhood during my trip in May.

Over last New Year I stayed at a hotel in the area in Barcelona and saw Prestige (which I had never seen before)near Casa Mila. I entered to check out. Entrance door was tall and dark. You might not recognize it as a hotel at the first look. Inside was a small reception counter on the ground floor and nothing else. A polite young receptionist lady informed me the hotel opened like a few month ago. Maybe that's why she was a little eager to present it to us. On the brochure she gave us, the rates looked ok (170-250 euro range?) for this modern, boutique type of hotel. She let us see the 1st(european) floor which was a small breafast room + a sittig room and a few guest rooms that I could not see of course.
My hotel was Cristal Palace (4*, not a palace but it was calle so) closer to Plaça Catalunya, a modern hotel which I reserved by an internet hotel service. A double room for CHF 105.00 euro which I found a great bargain all in all. They first gave us a somewhat smaller room on the 8th floor, back side so no view (for cheap internet rate ?) but with better amenities (bath robes, jacuzzi bath). Before touching anything I called the reception and asked if we could have a room with a view even with some supplement to pay. Another nice receptionist checked(never had a rude hotel staff in Barcelona !) the availability and found us a 4th floor room. Much, much better, without above mentioned bath amenities BUT a larger room with a wall-to-wall/ceiling-to-floor window facing a nice side street making the room very light and for no extar charge. Included breafast buffet was good and 2 times bigger than at Prestige. Another nice touch was they had a Nespresso (Espresso machine by Nestlé
machine on each floor and coffee capusels in your room so you can make good espresso by yourself.

Leslie and Hike, thanks for your responses. Hike, I appreciate the additional info on the Cristal Palace.
I actually have a reservation at Gran Via, but I've heard that the guest rooms are aging and becoming a bit worn. Since my budget will allow me to spend a little more, I'm now investigating alternatives, which is how I came across the Prestige.
Lesli, which hotel are you staying at when you go to Barcelona in May?

I'm traveling with a friend who is currently out of work, so we are really trying to keep things on a budget. I decided to stick my neck out and try a place for which I can find no specific feedback, based on the combination of the neighborhood and the rates. It's called Hostal Central Barcelona, and it looks pretty good on its website, which says it was "completely reformed" in 2002, so at the very least, things will be fresh and new: http://www.hostalcentralbarcelona.com/
Other places I considered in the same area and price range are Hostal Oliva http://www.lasguias.com/hostaloliva/ and Hostal D'Uxelles http://www.barcelona-on-line.es/loca.../eng/index.asp
We were considering a splurge (for us) at the Banys Oriental, which has something of the style of the Prestige for about half the price and has been well-spoken of here. http://www.hotelbanysorientals.com/english.htm It's in what Maribel described as "near the young, hip and lively El Born area (kind of Bcn's answer to SoHo or Notting Hill)..." which would suit us fine, but we decided to spend a bit more in Sevilla and Granada and keep things cheap in Bcn and Madrid.
I have the feeling that we'll be out all day and most of the night as well, so saving a few dollars on hotels is fine with me.

Hi Lesli,
Thanks for the additional information. I think I'll add Banys Oriental to the list of hotels to consider.
I hope you have a wonderful trip to Spain in May. I'm really looking forward to being in Barcelona. I haven't been there since 1979 and it's been even longer for my husband. It should be fun!

Hi Diane, I've just come across above page where I saw 3 posts about Prestige Barcelona. Not so surprising the taxi driver didn'know this hotel because it had been opened only recently. Funny thing is one poster call it 2 star and another 3 star. But with the rooms equipped with Bang & Olfsen, it seems to me more like 4 (or 5 star).

Diane,
I stayed at the Gran Via about 3 years ago. The room was quite adequate and I don't remember it being worn (I would remember if there was a problem). Our room faced the front of the hotel so it was noisy with the windows open at night. They have double windows so you will hear no street noise when they're closed. The staff was very helpful and the location is wonderful. It was easy to return to the lobby between shopping and snacks. By the way, the lobby is very comfortable. Drinks are available from the bar and served in the lobby during afternoon and evening. It's a nice gathering spot. This hotel had THE BEST buffet breakfast (included) I have ever had at a european hotel. I would not hesitate to go back.

Not familiar with that hotel but things to consider, I stayed at the "Hotel Universal" a few blocks off the La Ramblas near the columbas square. very nice 4 star for about 140 Euros. I found that there are a lot of room up and down the La Rambla that are on the roof tops looking down. Very small and community showers but,,,, for like 40 euros. I like the nice hotels myself but found the cheap rooms to do just as well. Try to stay near the La Rambla for best access to things to do.
