Our plans for the Hotel Attalos are not working out so we are now considering two more hotels in Athens: King Jason on Omondia Square (near Arch. Museum) and the Oscar Hotel near the Larissa Train Station (also near Omondia Square). We are looking for clean and quiet room in a safe area for less than 80 euors per double per night. Any thoughts on the King Jason or the Oscar Hotel? Also, we are considering the Nafplia Hotel in Nafplion. Any thoughts?

The Omonia Square area has a bad reputation at night for druggies and prostitutes.

Stick with the Plaka and Monastiraki areas. Check the Pan, Arethusa and Amazon hotels.

Did you consider the Cecil - it's practically next door the the Attalos.

You said that your plans are not working out at Attalos.
I have heard stories of people who were unable to book direct with hotels and others who are able to obtain bookings at the same hotel at the same time.
In our experience using a Greek travel agent like Uli at Dolphin Hellas has been able to book a room for us during busy times because Dolphin Hellas sometimes books blocks of rooms at popular hotels just to ensure their clients can get a room.
Often the price is better using a Greek travel agent as well.

If you have been trying to book directly then you might want to consider using a reputable travel agent and let them try to book for you, you may be pleasantly surprised.

I agree with brotherleelove. Omondia Square is too far away from the action. You want to stay near the Plaka/Syntagma Sq/Kolonaki to be close to the major sites, shops, nightlife and restaurants.

I recently stayed at the Intertcontinental, but that is way out of your price range.

We're staying at the Hotel Attalos in early June - what kind of problems are you having with this hotel, booking dates or other things?

In Nafplio, we are staying at the Hotel Leto in a double room [with nice sea view according to hotel], for 60,00 euros per night [with breakfast and taxes included].

My daughter and I stayed in Athens at the Attalos and at the Hotel Leto in Nafplion. I am sorry you cannot get a room at the Attalos but its a bustling place. If you can get the Leto in Nafplion, I would encourage you to book it. It was beautiful,reasonable and in a great location for walking the city to eat,sightsee and shop.We had a seaview room and it was lovely-some trees but still a great view.

Since you seem to be looking for a budget hotel, you may find this website helpful: http://tinyurl.com/ywr8wp.

Were it me, I would prefer to stay in the Plaka area, but if you can't find anything else, don't completely disegard hotels near Omonia Sq. As others have said, Omonia Sq is a seedy area, especially late at night, but I wouldn't consider it dangerous. As large cities go, Athens is very safe.

We stayed at the Astor hotel this summer. Decent basic hotel, breakfast buffet was very good. Roof top dining room had a great view of the Acropolis. Very centrally located, I would stay there again.

we're looking at numerous hotels in Athens; have zeroed in on Fresh; Periscope; Hera and Hermes. I"m so confused by the maps; and am concerned about staying in the Ominio area which doesn't sound good.........any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to anyone who really knows the city and neighborhoods.

The best areas to stay for walking around are the Plaka or Syntagma Square area.
I have stayed in the following hotels:
Arethusa, Syntagma - no complaints but not very atmospheric, good breakfast, nice position, friendly staff (I have stayed there on 3 occasions).\
Athens Gate, Syngrou - about a 10 minute walk from Plaka. At the nicer end of a busy, long road which is not so nice at the other end! This hotel is lovely with a great rooftop bar / restaurant. It may be out of your price bracket but if you can get a deal it's worth it. (2 stays there)
Attalos - also a 10 - 15 min walk from Plaka. Pretty decent, basic hotel but not as nice as Athens Gate. I would stay here again though because it is reasonably priced. This one also has a nice roof terrace / bar.
Most of the hotels in Plaka seem ok. The Plaka Hotel is very well positioned and quite reasonable.

A few years ago we stayed at The Athenian Inn...very reasonable (under $100 now, also) and it's in the "hot", upscale Kolonaki District.

The Inn is in no way to be confused with the Ritz, or ThinGorgjus' Intercontinental...but it is perfectly safe and adequate...smallish rooms, decent bathrooms, very friendly and helpful staff, acceptable breakfast..and walking distance to most of the sights you'd want to see.

I've stayed a the Hotel Hera twice now. It's about 2 or 3 blocks south of the Acropolis metro station and pretty convenient (less than 10 minutes walk to the Plaka). The metro entrance is right by the new Acropolis Museum. The hotel's rooms are kind of small but I though they were very comfortable. OAT uses this hotel for their Greece trips. There are a lot of restaurants within 2 or 3 blocks if you don't want to go into the Plaka, not to mention many bars and small shops.
