Just in case you didn't know, the Omonia Square has a bad reputation for the druggies and prostitutes that hang out around there at night.

Thanks brotherleelove2004 did not know that. What can you suggest then? Want to be in Athens for 3 days. Any good hotels you think would work.

Focus your search on the Syntagma Square and Monastiraki Square areas. They're a bit more centrally located and are close to the Plaka, Acropolis/Parthenon, Parliament and Kolonaki Square areas.

To start, check the websites for these hotels: Pan, Arethusa, Metropolis, Amazon, Acropolis View, Omiros, Hermes, Cecil, Attalos, Athens Gate and Tempi. It might be necessary to take two smaller rooms as not all hotels have one room large enough for 4 people. In the future it's best if you state what your maximum combined daily room budget will be, in Euro.

vittoria, you already got many good hotel suggestions from brotherleelove to check out. My reaction to your original question was: Why do you want to stay in Omonia? There are many wonderful hotels close to Plaka and the Acropolis. More details on what kind and cost of lodging you want will help for tips.

A group of 40 of us stayed at the Athens Golden City Hotel, just a few blocks (300m) off Omonia in July 2008 and we thought it was a nice place. It was easy to walk to the Metro and the Archaeological Museum. We didn't have any problems, even walking around the area at night and there were some grocery stores and restaurants in walking distance. As noted above, there are probably more central places to stay for the tourist sites.

Some alternative locations are: Syntagma Square, Plaka, Acropolis and Thission. They are all located in the very centre of Athens and are very close to metro stations. There are cafes, restaurants, bars, shops and archeological sites in a walking distance. To cut a long story short, Syntagma Square is connected with Plaka, Acropolis and Thission by a pedfestrian street which is the most frequent all over Athens (Ermou street). It is full of shops and there are usually street actors, dancers, singers there who offer a pleasant atmosphere to people who pass through. Aft the end of Ermou street you will arrive at Monastiraki Square where you will find an outdoor market and plenty of traditional restaurants. You can see Thission from there and walk easily towards the Acropolis. I think that Ochre and Brown Hotel at Thission Square is a very good choice. It is elegant and clean: http://www.athens-greece.us/ochre-and-brown/ . You will find a map in that page where you can see what means of transport and other amenities are nearby.

Thanks for everyones suggestions. Wanted to stay in Omonia Sq to be close to Acropolis and the museums but seems this is not a great idea.
The budget now is around 125.00 Canadian a night per room which is approx 86 Euros as of today so we will check some of the Hotel suggestions at see if it will fit our budget.

We do want two rooms . Do you know if Syntagma Square will have hotels that would carry this?

Monastiraki and Syntagma Squares are closer to the Acropolis anyway.

Check the Metropolis, Omiros, and Tempi Hotels.

The AVA Hotel may not be within your budget. If it is, it is super location ... but as I understood you, you wanted 2 rooms @ 105 per room = 210. AVA has suites but think they may be more than 210 in late june. If you have an offer at that price, jump on it.

Rooms at 105 or less are hard to find in Late June in Plaka district or Makrigianni District (which is right next to plaka but on the South side of Acropolis, rather than east). Try Hotel Phillipos or Hotel Phidias or HOtel Airotel Parthenon in Makrigianni -- these are all close to the Acropolis Metro Stop ... Or Hotel Metropolis, Pan, Arethusa, Central, Cypria, all in Plaka about 200-500 yards from Syntagma Square, and its Metro Stop and Airport bus stop.

As others have said Omonia is NOT convenient to Acropolis and other historic sites ... you need a good map. Here is a simplified map of Central Athens which shows many of the hotels named: http://www.cretetravel.com/Athens/At...Athens_map.htm -- others will show locations on their websites. GOOGLE them ... and then check the reviews of other travelers by googling "Hotel XXX TA Reviews"

We stayed at the Hotel Alma on Omonia last Summer. The hotel was OK (and budget priced), but, yes, the neighborhood is very seedy. I would look elsewhere if you can.
