Athens hotels

I am looking for a hotel in Athens in June for our family of five. I'm a little taken aback by the prices. I never thought I would think New York City was a bargain!

We would like to be in a central location and are deciding between the Athos Hotel (double and triple for 210 euros), the Adrian Hotel (double and triple for 249) and the Acropolis View (double and triple for 190). I like the idea that all these have rooftops with views of the Acropolis. Does anyone have any experience with any of these hotels or recommendations of others in the same price range? Is it better to be in the Plaka area or closer to the Acropolis? Thanks for any feedback.

We've stayed at the Acropolis View twice and thought it was just fine. Good location, friendly staff, and a bit of an Acropolis view, depending upon the room. Are you saying that a double and a triple are EACH 190 eur? That is quite a jump from when we were there, but then it was 1998, and this is now. We were w/in 10 min walk of the Plaka; I don't think I would want to stay in it, but it is fun to wander around and eat there.

The Attalos Hotel is safe, within easy walking distance of the Plaka and Syntagma Square on Athinas Street. They have a rooftop lounge for a nice view of the Acropolis and Parthenon at night AND they are much less expensive than those hotels you've mentioned.

P.S. The Plaka area is as close to the Acropolis as you can get!

That is the price for the double and triple together. We wanted to stay at the Attalos, but it is booked.

We liked the location and the atmosphere of the Acropolis View when we were there about eight years ago. It was family run, and they gave us some good restaurant recommendations in the neighborhood. The roof-top view however was not from a very classy rooftop. Maybe they've improved it. But I stole up there at dawn, anyway, to see the Acropolis at sunrise. If you have not been to Greece before, be forewarned that all but the most expensive hotels are pretty plain in their decor.

digbydog: we stayed in the attolos hotel in the centre of athens. just checking their prices there and they are: 102 euro for triple and 120 for a quadruple. the rooms are really basic but it's central and the view of the acropylis at night from their little roof top bar is amazing. all the restaurants and cafes are just around the corner and the plaka is 5-10 mins walk. if you are just looking for a place to lay your head then this is fine.

i don't like the attalos at all, there is just not much to commend it other than price. we stayed at the adrian last time we were in athens and really liked it. we requested a room on the top floor with an acropolis view and would lie in bed with the lights out looking at the lit up parthenon. right in plaka but the rooms at the back are very quiet. the food at breakfast on the roof is nothing special, but the view can't be beat
