The other thing I do, in addition to taking written confirmation with me, is to call or write about 10 days before to re-confirm. I always ask them to confirm my room on the specific dates. I always get an email back reconfirming the reservation. That way, if you are out of luck, you have 10 days to find something else and you aren't surprised on arrival. Although that's never been the case for me -- knock on wood!
