I don't know how I missed this post for so long!! To Caroline Edinburgh, my deepest sorrow and apologies for recommending a place that made you sick! It must have changed hands because we still rave about the dinners we had there a few years ago. SO SORRY!!!
To indovina: We took a private boat tour of Capri, switched into a tiny boat just outside the Blue Grotto and did get in. But our hotel informed us that water conditions sometimes make the entrance too tricky, even when the weather is perfectly nice.

Yikes, we've gone to Il Ritrovo for three summers and it was great. I think it is still owned by the same family. I do know that the summer of 2006 they had a culinary student from California apprenticing with them. Sometimes one just has bad luck with a restaurant, I guess. I would go back if I ever have the enormous good fortune of returning to the Amalfi Coast.

Indovina - I'm glad your trip is almost here....I have too long a wait for mine.
I chuckle when I read the "just relax" responses. I guess if it was my 10th trip I'd be able to do that, otherwise how does one just stay put when Capri is calling, Ravello's views are beckoning, Amalfi awaits, etc., etc., etc.
Oh I know everyone has different travel styles and needs - its just when I finally get there I won't be relaxing...that is until the end of the day...hopefully on a balcony or terrace with an incredible view and definitely with a limoncello in hand! ;-)
Have a wonderful trip!

travelfan- I know how you feel! The first time I went to the AC I couldn't stop racing from place to place repeating over and over "this is unbelievable! this is inbelievable!" to myself. lol, it took a while before I calmed down.

I did not realize "Only You" was set in Positano....I'll have to find it! When we were there, we kept referring to "Under the Tuscan Sun"....and we stayed at the Hotel California...where some scenes were shot...the owner is happy to show you the room & tell you all about it very proudly!
Loved Positano!

I'm heading to this area of Italy next spring. I keep reading the posts and looking at photographs. It certain looks lovely. How would you compare Capri/Amalfi Coast with Lake Como? After looking at photographs of Lake Como I could not see what the big deal was -- until I went there -- and then I "got it." Lake Como was magical, but not in a way I can describe.

I second relaxing, taking in the view, and LA TAGLIETTLA. We just told the owner to "take care of us" and we must have had 12 courses!
We stayed at the Hotel California across the street from the Sirenuese where "Only You" was filmed. We had dinner there, and while it was beautiful, I wouldn't pay the money for the difference in the views. We loved the Hotel California and its views.
We were just in Bellagio and on Lake Como this summer, and it was breathtaking, but I still think Positano takes the edge. There is nothing like sitting in a little cafe and having a huge orange fall in your lap!

Hi I,
>3 days in Positano - what is the #1 thing to do?<
1. In the evening take the Orange bus to Praiano and look at the view of Positano from the church square.
2. Take the ferry to Amalfi and the SITA bus back.
Enjoy your visit.

They are both wonderful in their own ways.

Major differences between Lake Como and Amalfi are:
1) Amalfi is sea and Lake Como is lake;
2) Amlfi is souhtern Italy and Lakes and Liguria are in the north; and
3) Mozzerella di Bufala, Limoncello, and tomatos from Vesuvius are in the Amalfi region.
Up in the north of Italy the Ligurian coast, where I believe Ira lives, is somewhat similar scenary to the Amalfi area.
We love both areas. We just returned from the north of Italy and Liguria - absolutely love it everytime. Of course, once in Campania and things are piano piano I love this as well.
