Alcohol on NCL Hawaii

About how much are drinks on the cruise? (Pride of America)
Do you ever take your own alcohol on the ship?

Most are $5.50+ plus an automatic 15% tip added. NCL will not allow any alcohol to be brought aboard. They xray everything. If you have booze in your checked luggage they will send you a note to come get the suitcase with the alcohol in it. When you get there, you must open your bag and give them the alcohol. You will get it back the last morning.

I find it sad that we cannot bring alcohol aboard. It is not only NCL, they all do it. I remember in the 90's you could buy as much liquor as you wanted at the duty free shop on the ship(ex:32oz for $7)or off the ship (I remember buying in St-Thomas a 40oz of Canadian whisky for 5$!!!). Then on one trip they started to charge $2 more(big deal) if you were to drink it aboard and then no more booze allowed. So take advantage of the Captain's party (free booze) but even there they're getting cheaper and cheaper.

I then got wiser and filed a few bottles of water with rhum or vodka and took them with me in my carry-on on the plane. And now it's the end of everything. We cannot even bring a bottle of water on a plane anymore.

With all the money the cruise lines make we should be allowed to buy, at least, one bottle of something on the ship and then we would be happy to buy their drinks.

And since you are talking about NCL Hawaii, I always wanted to go to Hawaii on a cruise until I found out that there is no casino on ships cruising Hawaii. Believe me, I'm not a big gambler. The most I've ever spent is about $80 on a cruise in the slot machines. We have a big casino in my town for over 20 years and I went there last year for the first time and spent $15. But for me (no casino = no ship), I like to go to the casino on the ship and look at people winning or more often losing and try my luck.

I was on the Norwegian Jade last May and a women told me they made her open all her suitcases and what they thought was alcohol was a bottle of shampoo she had. She was very mad.

This May I'm going on Freedom Carnival. I've a few months to figure out something. LOL
Have a great trip if you go.

whiteowlmtlca, I agree with you! If prices are reasonable (I've heard they are outrageous) for drinks, I don't think people would care so much - it's just that feeling that you are being held up. We are not big cruisers but this seemed to be the best way to see the islands. We'll see - my expectations for NCL are very low!
We'll see how creative we can be about taking some on the ship .

Holland America allows you to bring wine and champagne aboard. In February I brought on 3 bottles of wine---2 in my carry-on; one in my suitcase.
