ej....I just answered Marion's post. In a nutshell, we had to take Ellie this morning to be put to sleep. She got much worse during the night and there wasn't anything left to do. Thank you so much for your thoughts.
Again, to fisherstan, I apologize for taking over the original question. I hope you have a wonderful trip!

fisherstan: I have one nice outfit that I keep at the house in STJ and have never worn it. The fanciest thing I've ever worn there was a sundress to dinner. Even at fancier places like Asolare, many people opt for "chic" casual consisting of sundresses for women and Bermuda shorts and golf/Hawaiian shirts for men. Of course, you should wear whatever you feel like on your special occasion. The whole island is very casual. Even the billionaire at the bar is in t-shirt and flipflops.
iw: So sorry to follow your sad turn of events. We lost our 12 year old, 140 lb. rottweiler this past winter from something similar. If it is any comfort, there's not much they can do when the backend goes. As I am sure you knew with your "baby", I knew with mine when it was time. IMO, there's no greater gift than peace and dignity at the end of a long road.

Tuxe, that's a lovely way of putting it.
When a very similar thing happened to our English mastiff in 2004, we were stunned, as we had never heard of such a thing happening. Now it's become, if not common exactly, not so unusual to hear.
Did you entertain the idea of getting one of those cart things for your rottie? We had considered it, as our boy's spirits seemed to be high and alert, but then over the course of just one week, one thing after another gave out on him and we just had to say goodbye.

Tuxedocat and mah...Thank you. Deep down I know that we made the only decision that we could, but selfishly, I want her here! There is nothing like facing a bunch of 2nd graders today on the last five days of school to divert one's attention....I've had no time to think!!!

Tuxedocat, thanks you make me feel comfortable packing just causal stuff, i know we will not be "out of place" in how we dress. I also agree with your kind words to Karen.
Karen, again (other thread) I am so sorry about Ellie and admire you and your husbands unselfishness with her life. Although we might not always understand it, God's timing is always in our best interest. Peace to you both.

fisherstan...Once again I am focusing on what to take with us on our trip. The other replies that you have received have helped me decide what to take. I am really trying not to overpack. I keep remembering that we will be in our suits during the day, so not as much day wear is needed. For me it all comes down to shoes. I can't wait for your trip report as I have never been to St. John.
