More Honeymoon Help

I am getting married October 4. We were going to go to Europe, but my fiancee is getting about antsy about going there because of the war. I normally wouldn't care about anti-Americanism, but since you only get one honeymoon (hopefully), I really don't want to risk it. Anyway, we have started looking at "the islands."

We want:

1. Quiet
2. No screaming 4 year olds or 24 year olds
3. A distinct lack of "ugly Americans"

Really do not care about casinos or nightlife. Just laid back sight seeing, beach walking, and comfortable rooms. The three places that seem the most appropriate from what I can see are:

Anguilla
Turks & Caicos
St. Kitts & Nevis (specifically Nevis)

Anyone have any other islands to add?
When I say "ugly Americans," I do not mean "physically unattractive" -- I mean the kind I have run into in Europe -- screaming at waitstaff about small portions at a restaurant, some punk 14 year old being rude to a shopkeeper, getting mad because the bookstore does not accept dollars, etc.

well their really is not control of who will be a certain destination.

It sounds to me that the islands you mentioned are good locations. Cap Juluca would be great for a honeymoon, although it is not adults only. Maybe someone else can chime in on the other islands.

Check out the Royal Hideaway in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. (45 miles south of Cancun) We went here last year Oct. 10th for 5 nights and had beautiful weather and it is a truly beautiful place, atmosphere, service, food, rooms, etc. And right now you can get a great rate. Check out "eleisurelink.com" Congratulations on your engagement (my anniversary is Oct. 5th)! Lots of luck!

How about dividing your time between islands such as St. Kitts and Nevis. You could stay at the quieter property of Montpelier Plantation in Nevis. Montpelier has a private beach area but the property is not situated directly on the beach. It would be very romantic to stay on a plantation type property. You can read about the property by typing out Montpelier Plantation, Nevis in Google or type out Where2Stay or Where2Stay.com where you can get info and travelers reviews on many resorts.

If you truly do not mind the quiet, and if you're not looking for Four-Seasons/Ritz-Carlton poshness, I'd recommend the Petit St. VIncent resort in the Grenadines. The Grenadines are relatively untouristed as they are not convenient for most people to get to. (Change planes in Barbados, fly to Union Island, then take a boat to whichever island you choose... that sort of thing) Basically, the type of place that "ugly Americans" wouldn't want to bother with. As it's a private island resort, there are very few people there. The rooms are private, and you can choose anything from beach front to a cottage high on a bluff overlooking the ocean.

www.psvresort.com Ideal for those seeking peace, quiet, and above all, privacy. Not good if you're looking for nighttime activities. Basically, you and your spouse-to-be will be providing your own entertainment. (Though some watersports are available, and excursions can be arranged)

Have you considered St. John in the USVI? Your list pretty much sums it up and given its size you are bound to have a relaxing and peaceful holiday. I am heading there with my fiance at the end of April to say our "I do's" and have done a ton of research both on the web and other resources. Our list started out like yours and I think we'll be plenty happy with it given all I've seen. You also may want to post the same question on the St. John forum at www.usvi-on-line.com as there are all kinds of people on that forum who have been to the island a number of times. Certainly they will be able to help out from experience. Whatever you decide, congratulations and have a super time!

Lots of Texans with gold chains and daytrippers on St.John...Covecastles, Anguilla;Horned Dorset Primavera,West coast of PR might better fit your headstyle. October weather in tropics can be dicey, tho first two weeks October can be sweet;keep an eye out on stormcarib.com (or net). You might want to head even further south to Los Roques/tho you'll need go through Caracas airport --or further still,to Brazil

The places you really want to avoid are those with frequent cruise ship stops. That results in whatever island being inundated for several hours with sunburned,T-shirted tourists, the shopkeepers go into a feeding frenzy, the cab drivers double their rates, and generalized chaos ensues. Call or check the web sites of the Tourism Depts. of islands you're interested in and ask them if cruise ships frequent their ports. Not to be viscious to cruise ships (I've taken cruises myself), but they won't be conducive to the kind of atmosphere you're looking for.

Anguilla does seem to be the best place for you - we stayed there last year, at Frangipani. It had everything you mentioned: a gorgeous beach, very very quiet, very comfortable rooms with everything you could possibly need. We were also at Nevis some years ago and loved it - we stayed at Nisbet Plantation and it was just wonderful. The only difference was the beach - much more beautiful in Anguilla! On the other had, the people in Nevis were just wonderful, SO friendly. (People in Anguilla were friendly too, but rather distant.)

Just keep in mind a majority of the resorts on Anguilla ARE CLOSED when you are going to be on your honeymoon.
