Jamaica Help
Is there a place in Jamaica where we can go that...

- is on a nice beach
- no need to rent a car
- is reasonably secure
- not too expensive
- not an AI but near places where one can get good local food

We do not need luxuries on this vacation, just a comfortable room on a beach close to where we can take some local tours and sample some local food and nightlife.

Thanks.
Treasure Beach at www.treasurebeach.net has a wide spectrum of well-priced holiday accomodations, guesthouses to 3 10 room hotels, wonderful villas, good local restaurants, no tourist/resort atmosphere, walkable distances and one of the most welcoming communities on island.

just returned 3-1 from jamaica. stayed at the charela inn on 7 mile beach in negril. it was everything you are looking for. the room was great but cost about 150/day. the white sands hotel next door had similiar rooms for
about $80/day. beautiful beach. lots of restaurants and entertainment within walking distance on safe beach.

You can also check out www.negril.com There are tons of great places right on the beach in Negril that are more laid back, more affordable and where youcan walk to everyting. The site Igave you ahve a great message board with tons of experts onthe area, and a map of the area to help you with the layout in proximity to town.

Charele Inn, Neril Gardens, Ledgens all get good reviews.

P.S. Fly through MoBay/our PPV insured driver/vans or those from other props in TB will be on hand to meet you. If it's not already included in the accomodation price, the rate is generally US$200 roundtrip for two, incl.luggage from MoBay (surcharge if you coming via Kingston,so don't),plus US$20 driver tip. You'll see more of the island en route than most tourists do during their entire stay....

Treasure Beach is great but a few drawbacks you should be aware of: the beaches are not as pretty or as white as in Negril, it's over 2 hours to drive there from Montego Bay airport (vs. 1 hour to Negril), and if you really are looking for nightlife, there is not much to speak of. In that case you're better off in Negril where there are lots of reasonably priced accomodations, restaurants and bars accessable by walking along the 7 mile beach.

However, Treasure Beach is a great, friendly, safe community and a wonderful destination for a truly local experience. If you do decide to go there, you'll not be disappointed.

Good luck and have fun, wherever you choose to go!

Third postscript: It may be telling in the number of people who've been going to Negril for some time who've had it with the place and who are moving on to Treasure Beach. I'll not knock the beach--it's a beauty. But the rest is now, sadly, pure touristdom/Babylon even,if you will...

tivertonhouse.....

I'll probably be contacting you within a week with this.

I looked at the website and those gueshouses look great.

When we go to a place we'd like to learn about the locale, try the food, not attempt to have tons of the same food that we have here in NY.

And, heck, for $75 / night where can you go wrong?

Check esp. MarBlue Domicil and Irie Rest, two of the more favored guesthouses in walking distance of everything. Former is new, Euro-style and very well-done with rooms for US$59 and up;latter is an old-time favorite, funkier, less on the tariff, and on the 3/4 mile more private Billy's Bay beach which you share with only 4 other villas. Jack Sprat and Treasure Cot at Jake's also worth more than a cursory look. Stuart at Treasure Tours ([email protected]) can ably provide reliable airport meeting services/transfers at US$220 roundtrip for 2,incl.driver tip,MoBay arrivals, as well as great touring explorations and excursions with Rebecca Wiersma of Treasure Tours. A journey by boat to and into Black River and a stop at Pelican Bar are musts. Wild Onion, Heart of Love for food; Jake's and Fisherman's Bar for drinks. Snorkeling out at Sunny Isle off the coast of Alligator Pond and a stop for dinner at Little Ochee for the best fish and bammy in Jamaica also highly recommended.

Tivertonhouse,
I finally succumbed to curiousity and went to look at the Treasure Beach website. What a great area! This is exactly the kind of destination I gravitate towards. Since so much of the information about Jamaica is geared towards the huge resort, all inclusive type tourist, I wasn't aware that this area existed. Thanks for the info, I'm hoping to visit soon!
