Niagara on the Lake

Two couples need recommendations for overnight accommodations at Niagara on the Lake. We have never been to this area and are completely lost as to where to stay. We would like to pay a moderate price for a clean overnight room. Bed and Breakfast referrals would be welcome as well as a hotel or motel.

Please email: [email protected]

Thanks to all who have been there, done that.

Moderate is a difficult term for Niagara on the Lake.... if you want quaint, things can get pricy... You can probably get a room for under $200 at the Pillor and Post or the Best Western Colonel Butler, depending on dates...

Check the Chamber website for referral agencies on B&B's... they should be able to match you for your needs and price...

You could also stay in Niagara Falls (15 minute drive) in any chain you choose... however its hard to recommend without your budget information...

Prices get higher in high season, and weekends get booked well in advance. A couple of ideas:
- The Moffat Inn is quaint, charming, excellent location, owned by Vintage Hotels same as the Prince of Wales next door - but a fraction of the price.
The rooms are clean, comfortable and nicely furnished (the ones I've stayed in) - in a variety of sizes from simple bedrooms to small suites. BUT - my main complaint has been with heating/air conditioning. This is an old building, rooms are more recently renovated but some have windows that open and some do not. I have found it sometimes difficult to adjust the temperature to a comfortable level, so you may want to ask about this when you book.
We once stayed at The Stable House - another good location easy walking distance, nice yard, simple but comfortable bedrooms. Moderate price. http://www.vrr.com/thestable/index.html
The Weatherpine Inn rooms were more luxurious (althought a bit small) and also more money, nice veranda, a couple more blocks farther to walk to the main part of town and across from one of the other Vintage Inns. http://www.niagarabedandbreakfasts.c...erpine_inn.htm
The Old Bank House has a lovely location overlooking the lake and just a couple of blocks from main part of town. The last room we stayed in was maybe just a little tired, but still comfortable, and they have a very nice dining room and good breakfasts. Maybe on the high side of moderate in price. http://www.niagarabedandbreakfasts.c...ountry_inn.htm

Mat,

Thank you for all your suggestions. I'm new on this Fodor's site and not sure if I'm replying only to you or to others who have answered my request.

Early August. Any recommendations right in Niagara Falls, Ontario? We would be open to a Marriott, Hampton, etc.

In Niagara Falls, there is a row of big hotels, mostly the large chains, in the area known as the "Fallsview District". These are up on a ridge overlooking the falls and most have at least some rooms with spectacular views. There is a Marriott Fallsview, Embassy Suites, Radisson and others - see map:
http://www.niagarafallslive.com/niag..._hotel_map.htm
Scroll down to the lower left corner near the Fallsview Casino - the hotels designated with a gold star are the Fallsview ones I am referring to. You might want to compare which ones are offering the best (if any) packages for your dates plus any special amenities you want. Sometimes they have Room and Dinner or Room and Attraction Ticket deals, etc.

If a room with a view is not important, some of the other hotels shown may offer better prices. If you have any flexibility, weekdays rates are often significantly less than weekends (and the crowds are a little thinner). However, note that the first Monday in August is a Long Weekend in most of Canada which will make things especially busy.

If you're going to drive from Niagara Falls to Niagara-on-the-Lake, Take the very scenic Niagara Parkway which has some interesting stops as well as a few wineries as you approach Niagara-on-the-Lake.

I haven't read all the posts but another thing about NOTL is this -- you mention that you need 'overnight accommodations' which sounds like one night to me. If that's the case, you should know that most of the inns (not sure about the B&Bs) will only take two nights accommodation on weekends at this time of year.

Do you realize how nearby NOTL is to Niagara Falls? It is only a short drive along one of the most beautiful stretches of of road anywhere. NOTL is over-priced and NF, Ontario has a huge amount of hotels and B&B's in every price range. One that looks right at the Falls, bridge and river is Michael's Inn. Lots of free parking and nice people there. I will mention an odd story about NOTL - years ago the Queen Mother was going there and the pilot of her aircraft could not find the runway for the dense fog (not uncommon there - cannot imagine why they flew her). The pilot made three attempts to find the runway and could not and on the 4th, just went down where he thought it should be and was successful. Crazy. So like that recent crash that killed the polish delegation in Russia, but with a luckier ending.

We are driving from Cleveland/Akron, Ohio early August 4 and need only one night accommodations. Our time is short but we must leave to return mid-afternoon August 5. With all this information I'm sure we will find what we need.

Again, thank all of you for such detailed information. This website is fantastic.

So a quick getaway and first trip to Niagara. I can suggest a plan based on my tastes (and of course yours might differ) which will give you a tour of the highlights.

Head straight to Niagara-on-the-Lake (NOTL), assuming you can get there by lunchtime. Take the fastest route, mostly highway. Spend a couple of hours wandering the main street shops, appreciating the Victorian streetscape charm. Have lunch - good restaurant selection ranges from high end Inns to a couple of casual pubs. Sample some excellent Niagara wine with lunch.

Mid to late afternoon, head towards Niagara Falls via the Niagara Parkway. There are a couple of wineries just off the Parkway for a "tasting" stop if you like. Winery map: http://www.wineriesofniagaraonthelak...stingDec09.pdf . (There are many other wineries, but farther afield.) Worthwhile scenic stops on the Parkway include Queenston Heights and the Whirlpool.

Spend the night in Niagara Falls, Fallsview room with view if budget allows (but can be very pricey mid summer). Check into hotel then walk down to the Horseshoe Falls. Enjoy the walking path adjacent to river with lots of benches and nice gardens. Pre-book any Falls activities that interest you for late afternoon or early evening (e.g. Maid of the Mist etc). After head back uphill via Clifton Hill which is the noisy, touristy, tacky strip, but you've got to see it,it's part of the Falls experience. Dinner in a restaurant overlooking the Falls (the Keg in Embassy Suites is a decent steakhouse chain). Later, there are 2 Casinos, one at each end of the tourist district if these interest you. The next morning you could visit some more Falls Tourist attractions before heading home.

If touring wine country interests you more than Falls tourist attractions, you could instead focus on NOTL area spending the night there then drive the Parkway into the Falls the next morning for a couple hour visit and lunch before heading home.
