Kelly's vs International Antarctic Center
We have time to visit either Kelly's Underwater World and Antarctic Experience in Auckland or Christchurch's International Antarctic Center. Are they very different or similar since I am not too keen to repeat the experience in one trip?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

If you are more interested in viewing marine life, then Kelly Tarelton's is the place to go. Walking through the perspex (plexiglass) tubes embedded in the bottom of the giant saltwater tanks is an experience not to be missed. The Antarctic portion of Kelly Terelton's is much smaller than the very large Antarctic Center at Christchurch's airport. If you are primarily interested in learning more about Antarctica, you should go there. If you have the time, you should go to both - there won't be much repetition.

As I recall, we spent about 3 hours at Kelly Tarleton's Undersea World. We could have spent less if we skipped the silly snowcat ride, and if our kids hadn't wanted another circuit through the big tank.

We spent about 4 hours at the International Antarctic Centre, which is quite large and extensive, with many interactive exhibits. Wear long pants and bring a jacket to wear into the Antarctic cold room simulator. Also, you might want to reserve a little more time to visit the Orana Wildlife Reserve, just up the road from the airport.

chad:
ALF has given you good advice. Let me give you some practical advice. We took a bus from Cathedral Square to the Antarctic center. As I recall they run every 30 minutes or so. Be sure to tell the driver you will be returning to Cathedral Square so he will give you a return ticket at no extra cost.
Don't remember the exact fare but I think it was under a dollar.
John
