Pants vs. Shorts on Safari?
What do you recommend (men and women) for Tanzania end of June? besides the heat factor during the day is there a benefit to pants?

I've only been to Zambia, but we only wore shorts on drives and long pants only on walks. I brought extra long pants in March thinking it would be cooler, but it wasn't and didn't even wear them, I left them for the guys at camp (since I couldn't fit into them anyway) It was just too hot for long pants (October and March)

Depends. I would say take both options. Morning and evening game viewing drives can be a little chilly app 14-19 degrees. Also late at night, they can be quite cool. Ngorongro is definitely a must to take warm pants due to the temps which fall to app 10 degrees and below.
I wish I was going there again. 1/2 day crater tour instead of a full day still sounds fantastic.

I look hideous in above-the-knee shorts so they definitely do not feature in my safari wardrobe!
I wear mid-calf or full-length combat-style trousers or khakis. I bought a pair of those zip-off convertible shorts/trousers but they were really high waisted and uncomfortable and made me look about 3 sizes bigger than I am (as I discovered when I got the photos back...)

Carol,
I was in TZ Northern circuit in July two years ago; I didn't ever find it hot enough to wear shorts, so I generally wore trousers, usually with pants underneath. I took a cotton skirt too and sometimes wore that.
However, I live in SF and generally don't wear shorts anyway. If you're in the habit of wearing shorts, I'd say go ahead and do so. But I wasn't too hot in my trousers.
And, I leave next Thursday.
Just had to say that!

We went during the month of July to Tanzania and mostly wore khakis -- often I wear slacks to guard against insects, and dust kicked up from the road was almost a greater problem. So khakis could be brushed off, whereas finding a shower was sort of hit-or-miss when we were in the bush.
